Offensive Coordinator Candidates

OK Boys whose it going to be-I really haven't focused on the candidates yet-whose availiable? And affordable? Ramon Flanigan deserves an interview but he's a little Green(get it). You might laugh but fired UTEP Coach Gary Nord was thought of as one of the brightest young OC in the game when he was at Louisville and OU-did a good job as OC/HC for his first 3 years. He has experience we are not likely to get from other candidate and is known as an excellent recruiter. Honestly, UTEP is a tough job and generally the defense has been the big probl;em at UTEP. I'm sure there are still a couple of former Aggies who will get some consideration. Too bad Tulsa Assistant Head Coach Todd Graham formerly from West Virgina and Allen High School is a defensive specialist. He is regarded as one of the best recruiters around. Maybe we could get a two-for-one by giving one of the assistant coaches jobs to Sam Harrell or Jerry Bomar if they promise to let us borrow their sons for about 4 years-

Stallion, your thinking like me. I was wondering what HS is loaded with 3 star players?! Ennis? Grand Prairie?? Maybe we should look that way. Houston Cougar High did a good job getting Art Briles and the Stephenville Yellowjackets that came with him. Speaking of former Jacket QB's has Luker won a Grammy yet??

Bomar is the No. 1 QB recruit in the country but has committed to OU. Harrell had the best year of all QBs in the country but he committed to Tech along with his teammate Jenkins. Another teammate Jarvis Woodson lead the world in receiving. Another LM Tommy Daniels is a good looking prospect. Woodson, Jenkins and Daniels all at least considered SMU. If Art Briles is a genius he had all his records broken by Sam Harrell. Pretty big jump though to an Offensive Coordinator position-but maybe a potential QB Coach.

I know what you guys are saying, but I want a guy with proven college experience. Unfortunately I have little knowledge of small college coordinators.

How about John Mackovic? Just kidding.

Flanigan was the first name that popped into my head, but I really don't know how much control he has.

I imagine we could go after an offensive coordinator at a smaller school or a position coach at a larger school looking to be promoted. I'd go look for one of the best reciever or line coaches in the nation that would be interested and try and bring them in as OC.

Gary Nord might be a very good hire. He has been an OC and I would imagine that he could deliver a few players as well (W.Texas, NMex?).

Mike Shula (bama) has three former head coaches on his staff (Dave Rader is one, I think the old HC at Ark is another...)

This might be a stretch but what about Cale Gundy? I know he's got a cush job at OU but he's been an assistant in the college ranks for about 8 years and has worked with programs that are building(i.e. UAB when it was making the transition to D-I). I figure he probably learned a thing or two from Stoops. I'm sure I'll get laughed at but hey, it's worth the toss.

My question with Flanigan would be what kind of recruiter is he thought to be? Is he credited with landing any good players at UNT? How about Flanigan to coach WRs and Coach James takes over coaching TEs? I bet Flanigan might come down the road if he gets a reasonable (read: "similar financial") offer, because he has long maintained a fondness for SMU. And although the styles are very different, would the combination of passing and running ability make Flanigan an ideal coach for Chris Phillips?

I would think we should ask permission to talk to Todd Graham, alhough I doubt Coach Kragthorpe (Tulsa head coach) would grant it. I bet Graham might listen, since he spent a lot of time in the Dallas area when he was at Allen, but he's been on the move a lot lately (Allen to Morgantown to Tulsa) and maybe he wants to settle down with his family. But all indications suggest he's exactly what Stallion says - a terrific recruiter. And you can never have too many of those.

Do we get an offensive coordinator in place and then let him recommend an offensive line coach? Or do we grab a top line coach if there's one out there, and then wait on the offensive coordinator? I imagine neither can be a lengthy search -- linemen want to know who the line coach will be, and ANY offensive player will want to know about the coordinator. These hires need to be made quickly.

its extremely rare to see a Coordinator leave for another school to be a position coach unless he goes to a big time program. Maybe for SMU but I doubt it. Graham is Assistant Head Coach and defensive coordinator at Tulsa so he doesn't fit as Offensive Coordinator.

I'd love to see more SMU alumni among our coaching staff(s) in all sports. Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of them out there. Would love to see another course of study offered that would allow current SMU athletes to pursue coaching careers so we can eventually have head coaches who are alumni

Since we're tossing names out... how 'bout Tim Beck at Mansfield Summit. May be headed to OU or Arizona with one of his life-long buddies - Stoops Bros. Although Rhett Bomar has orally "committed", does OU really need him anymore considering strategic moves made since August? Dad wouldn't be as much an asset, but son would, I think. Keep the name Kyle Geller in mind, too, as D-1s lock-on to offensive genius. I hope Johnny Ringo returns to high school coaching; he's a good guy and a good coach. I'm sure Phil has thoroughly assessed the situation and will bring in the best he can.

At the last coach's breakfast, they said they would try and have another one in January to discuss recruiting. I thought to myself "...and meet the new assistant coaches."

While Flanigan is the sentimental favorite, and I love the idea of Flanigan as OC going into kids homes and telling them to come to SMU, I have to admit I know nothing about UNT's offense or recruiting. I know the difference on theinsiders between recruits expressing interest in SMU and those expressing interest in UNT is night and day, with SMU having 5 times as many kids expressing interest in SMU.

Maybe it is too early in the morning to be thinking straight, but what about Scott Maxfield, teh head coach of Blinn Junior College. He could bring Dane King, Bobby Chase, Kurt faulke, etc. with him.

Forget about Bomar...he probably has a job at OU - hence the commitment.

HS Head Coaches are not the answer to our O.C. position.

Think former head coaches that were successful O.C.s that can recruit. That is what we need, a proven O.C. that can help out in recruiting. Gary Nord and similar may be perfect.

The DMNews article was a bit vague, I think it MEANT to say that the OC would hire his OL coach.

No high school coaches! I don't want another guy in that locker room that has to make the adjustment from high school speed to college speed.

What about a coach from some of the close teams that have potent offenses. TTech, Sam Houston, La Tech.....I really am speaking out of my [deleted].
