Aljazeera 103.3 FM

Postby pony91 » Tue Dec 02, 2003 1:21 pm

I listened to a DFW break during Kornheiser and they mentioned the Frogs hung tough with Kansas. Guess what--no mention of SMU beating Texas Tech. Randy Galloway spent all day yesterday defending the frogs on the bowl mess. Atleast Cooperstein has a brain.
Has anyone else noticed how Fort Worth seems to be in control of the media lately. I hear the old Iraqi Information minister is looking for a job, maybe ESPN 103.3 can hire him.

I was an avid listener of Kornheiser in the mornings then all of a sudden here come these idiots Newy Scruggs and whoever that Estridge guy is. They took a strong radio station and mixed the powers of Channel 5 (very weak), Ft. Worth Star Telegram (even weaker) and TCU to make a very poor station. Galloway's awful, too.

I wouldn't exactly claim this media outlet is powerful, only political.

Well, I don't think FW controls the media just yet, but it is a little gross. Remember, 103.3 is the flagship station of the little Horned Frauds radio "network." However, as I drove to the basketball game last night, during one of the station's SportsCenter breaks, they went on a 5-minute lickfest over TCU and its hopes of upsetting the great KU Jayhawks. Fine - they were trying to boost the number of listeners on their station. After pushing that game, they mentioned that Tech was coming to town after getting "knocked off" (try "crushed") by Georgia Tech, and that the Red Raiders were seeking revenge, which they were going to "take out" on SMU.

On the way home after the game? No mention of how the Ponies stood up and knocked off Saint Bobby and defended Moody Coliseum.

I have no problem witth pushing the games on your own station, but if you preview a game (involving a local team, no less), at least have the class to discuss the outcome even if your favorite team didn't get the win.

Check out Fox 1190. They do a much more fair job of covering SMU. Who knows, maybe they even sent someone to the game (I'm betting 103.3 didn't.)

Speaking of which, do you suppose The Ticket -- the alleged flagship of the SMU radio network -- sent anyone? I doubt it, unless it was a kiss-up move for the weekly Bob Knight Hero Worship session they do.

By the way, good call, pony91 -- Coop is BY FAR the most knowledgeable sports call-in show guy in town. It's not even close.

Coop and Newy in drive time was the best thing they had going, and now they replaced that show with the useless piece of crap show with Galloway, who, if by some miracle he talks about anything other than the Cowboys and his man crush on Parcells, is absolutely worthless.

And ESPN radio has on numerous occassions completely ignored any mention whatsoever of the existence of an SMU game while talking up that other school to the west -- and I'm talking about last basketball season when they couldn't even make their own conference tournament, so respective records is no excuse for completely abandoning journalism.

Anyway, I had high hopes for new local sports radio, but ESPN radio has gone downhill since they debuted. About the only time I listen to any of the stations nowadays is if there is actually live sports.

The ticket had people from 2 shows there last night. It was very hard for both shows to say anything positive about SMU or the game. Mostly talk about the low attendance and "fat" cheerleaders. (IMO the attendance was far lower than it should have been. Many issues at play there.) Most of the actual game commentary had a negative spin.

They did have a lot to say about the Kansas game, and the great atmosphere there.

Basically it's what you would expect from that station.

The last I heard, he was working as the PR guy at TCU.

The Ticket was disgusting today. SMU must have gotten alot of press today because everytime I switched it on they were referring to it. Those a-holes Bob and Dan were at the game sucking up to Knight. They fleeced us for storming the court after the game, bagged on football and finally said Tech let SMU win. Total crap. Then the Hardline idiot Williams was going on about how great TCUs support was. I got news, I listened on the radio and the KU fans were loud as hell. Every negative angle they can exploit they do with SMU. Its really calculated and unprofessional.

Agree...sick of the TCU lickfest on 103.3. I heard one of their updates that had quotes from Patterson regarding their exciting trip to the Fort Worth Bowl and Dougherty (you would've thought they won the KU game) and absolutely no mention of SMU's win.

This all underscores the idea that The Ticket is anything but a sports station. Or an anything-but-sports station. I'm a little surprised to hear that Sturm was sinking to that level, even though he co-hosts the "Bob Knight Invented Basketball" extravaganza each week. He's a sharp guy who usually calls things as they are, good or bad. Perhaps working with that Dan dork has worn off on him. And why anyone wastes time listening to the Hardline is beyond me. If they're not going to offer any sports information -- which they have never provided since they first went on the air -- then they at least should be entertaining. And they're not that, either.

Basically, unless you hear Rich Phillips and Craig Swann calling an SMU game that's too far to drive to, or unless Norm Hitzges has Coach Bennett on for an interview, there is NEVER a reason to listen to The Ticket. I would even go so far as to encourage everyone to boycott all businesses that advertise on the station, and to go out of your way to support those companies' competitors. Numbers (read: "dollars") are the only input that station considers.

Someone call Sturm/McDowell tomorrow (I can't get to a phone during their show or I'd do it) and ask for their opinion about Bryan Hopkins. If they mock him, they'll just prove their idiocy. Of course, from their seats in the northeast corner of the court, they probably were too busy leering at the cheerleaders they later mocked to actually watch the game.

And it's one thing for a fan to comment to his buddy about the attractiveness (or lack thereof) of the cheerleaders or anyone else in the arena. But for two so-called "media" guys to take a discussion like that to the air .... gives them the same degree of credibility as the Hardline morons: ZERO.

And like Diamond M pointed out about Coop & Newy being the best thing 103.3 ever had, Coop's old show was the only good show The Ticket ever had. Since they made the brilliant move to can him (when he let actual sports knowledge get in the way of discussing wild party escapades and women's anatomy), it's been erased from all radios in my house and never will get played again. That station is awful.
