DALLAS (AP) — Oklahoma State accepted a bid Sunday to the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2 and will face No. 16 Mississippi.

The invitation to the 68-year-old bowl, which gets first pick of the Big 12's bowl-eligible teams after the Bowl Championship Series bowl, is the crowning achievement of coach Les Miles' three years in Stillwater, Okla.

The Cowboys (9-3) haven't played in a January bowl since the 1949 Delta Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., and their last trip to the Cotton Bowl came in 1945, when the school was called Oklahoma A&M.

"We're thrilled to go," Miles said. "This was not just an easy year for a very talented team - the natural flow of the season had to be overcome."

Ole Miss (9-3) will make its sixth bowl appearance in seven seasons. Ole Miss has played in the Cotton Bowl twice before, beating TCU 14-13 in 1956, and losing to Texas 12-7 in 1962.
