Training Table Issue

Postby Webmaster » Sat Dec 09, 2000 1:43 am

Peruna Punch made a post earlier that we should lead a charge to bring a training table to SMU Athletics. There has been a lot of talk recently and in the past about this matter.

PonyFans.com wants to know if there are any PonyFans or SMU fans that are truly serious about bringing a training table to SMU. We think the money would have to be raised and a lot of work will have to be done to bring one to SMU. If there is a lot of response and willingness to help bring a training table to SMU, PonyFans.com will do a little research and talk to certain people to find out where the University stands on this issue and what it would take to get a training table.

Once again, if we get a good response we will see what we can do to lead a charge. You may either post your opinion under this topic or email us at webmaster@ponyfans.com. We want to hear from you if you are a member of PonyFans or not.

For those of you who do not know what a training table is or its purpose here is what we know:
A training table is a meal plan for athletics. It is separate from the normal cafeteria and here is its advantages to athletes:

Staff would be able to watch players diets and food would be more nutritious than current food.
Team would be able to eat together three times a day
Athletes would not have to spend their own money on food, this helps financially and nutritiously
If a player is gaining or loosing weight, the coaches could monitor and control what they eat
Helps in scheduling conflicts, teams would not have to schedule practices around cafeteria's serving times
Helps in recruiting

There are probably more advantages to this, but these are what have been posted and the more obvious ones. We believe most D-I programs have a training table, but we don't have any stats on that. Any other info would help!

We hope to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to voice your opinion; if you don't want to post, please email us.

Thanks,
Webmasters, PonyFans.com

I really like the idea of us mustang faithful getting together and trying to start this. Like I have said, I am fresh out of school so money is short right now but I would be more than willing to give what I can and donate as much time as possible. This is something I feel very strongly about and if we can get it I am all for it.

Stanglover,
You would be just as helpful without money. If we could get people like you, BHo78, and other former players, you all are people that can talk to administration and tell them how necessary a training table would be, since you were just there. Money is not the only thing we would need. Your willingness is what we need.

I am behind you all. I would love to see what SMU has to say about this. Another thing is that this would help recruiting in other sports also.

This is one of the many problems why SMU is not a legit D-I program. It is missing too many little things. We have many similarities with D-Iaa programs and this is one of them.

It is my understanding that getting a training table acts as something as an unfair advantage to a student athlete. The reason we do not have one, as we do not have athletic dorms, is because SMU will not do anything for an athlete that it would not do for a student. Which is why we have Umphrey Lee. With that in mind, can we really get anywhere with this? I know it would take a lot more than a few former football players, although I guess it would get the ball rolling.

Aren't athletic dorms banned by the NCAA? A training table isn't so you cannot use that analogy. But you are right about SMU not wanting to give athletes something students don't have.

But look at it this way. Athletics will have one cafeteria, and students will have two.(Umphrey Lee and MacKlvany(sp?))

Well they may not be called athletic droms anymore, but they do exist. I have a friend who went to Oklahoma State and he says they have something like those.

It's sure not going to hurt any thing by trying. It is going on twelve seasons since we came back from the DP. It is time for everybody to quit hiding and being scared from what happened and step forward and stand on some toes if that what it takes. Just about everybody has some form of a training table so it can be used. I saw a story on channel 11 news the other night about the enthusiasm at TCU because of their football program. They said that they have had a 110% increase in applications to the school because of the notice TCU gets nationally because of a good program. SMU moans how they want quality students, well with a 110% increase in applications I think you can get some decent prospects. So putting the time and effort into football and the whole athletic program for that matter does reap benefits. TCU proved it and it burns me up that they were the ones that did it.

Long live the fat kids!!!

STANGLOVER, you need to send that message to Dr, Turner and the Board of Trustees. You are right on.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I would be more than happy to send this to Dr. Turner and Mr. Copeland but I don't know how to get it there. I am new to all this and information on how to get this ball rolling would be greatly appreciated and followed up on.

You can e-mail almost anyone associated with SMU thru www.smumustangs.com by going to the page for a particular sport where there is always a list of coaches that if you click on their name you can send an e-mail. Also there is a side bar with the different departments, etc. and I believe a way to get to the main SMU website. I would think that these other areas would also allow you to send e-mail to the appropriate person. Having been in SMU athletics and being a resent grad, you would probably have more impact then an old alum (like me) repeating what he has heard someplace else by someone else. If you decide to do so, be courteous and as factual as you can be. Lots of luck.

Of course, taking this to the administration as a group may be the better course of action, your choice.

I have always been a team player and felt that more can get done that way. Many voices are a lot louder than one.

Count me in. Financially, legwork, whining at the administration, whatever I can do to help.

Stanglover is right on track. When we win, the community gets excited, seats get filled, the university makes money. Everybody happy.

One thing that's always bugged my about SMU, is that Dallas doesn't give us much alliegance as the city's college (in the way that South Bend is loony about the Irish or that Austin supports its Longhorns).

So we have to go the extra distance to court both players and the public -- whether its better facilities (oh yeah, we have that now), a training table, or advertising. We know it works. Remember Mustang Mania? As much as I like being able to sit wherever I like, I'd prefer nosebleed seats and lots of Ws.

Oh, and one other thing. It might not be politically correct to give the athletes something that regular students don't have, but that's a totally illogical train of though.

Some people get scholarships because they're smart. Some people get better parking cause they're upperclassmen, etc. Some people get a better choice in classes or instructors because they register first. Nobody's really the same, and nobody REALLY gets treated EXACTLY the same.

I bet if you asked they vast majority of students, they'd trade a little of that equality for bragging rights over Rice, Tulane, TCU, Hawaii, San Jose and the rest.
