The one I saw was in Austin. Cannot remember the year. I think Wesson may have been the QB but not sure. I am pretty certain that Russell Exerlaban (sp?) was their kicker. We had a late score and just before the 2 point try a TE jumped and we ended up with a 7 yard try for the 2 and did not make it. I am under the opinion that most every team has a 2 or 3 yard play stuffed back in the book just to be brought out on a special occasion. Like Boise did against OU. Well our problem in that game was that we ended up with 4th a goal from about the 2 or 3 and had to use our special play to score, so did not have it for the 2 point try.

The only UT TD came on the end around where they run the triple option and appear to be pitching to the RB and the end going the other way "intercepts" the pitch. An almost perfectly played defensive game with one breakdown on contain. Heartbreaking.

Wish I had posted this earlier, but 2 comments about the Arky game, which I attended.
1) on that final drive, ED got completely closelined on the Arkansas sideline. He was a several yards out-of-bounds. There was an official there who witnessed it, but he didn't call the personal foul, maybe because he thought the penalty was too much of a game-changer, but it was a TERRIBLE non-call.
2) SMU mismanaged the clock on that final drive. They took way too much time in the huddle.
Was Eddie Garcia our place-kicker for that game? Whomever it was, my memory was he was clutch, but I simply was hoping he was 5 yards closer.

Yep, I think Garcia had left the year earlier.
Harrell was a solid kicker.
No one talks about the ED closeline. If I recall, Arkansas player was not even on the field, but simply standing on the sideline.

So Cal Pony-I believe that was the same play with probably :30 seconds left I described above. Quite frankly whatever that DB did to get Dickerson down all by himself one on one in the open field was probably a great play by the kid.

ponyfans.com must have been off the charts traffic wise after that game.
My bad, mustangmanaics.com was the popular board in the 80's.

In the past when this has aired on ESPN Classic it has been edited down, I think even missing an SMU touchdown. Hope this is the full broadcast.

I'm going to have to watch this. The ref who made the interference call was Horton Nesrtra - an uncle of a friend of mine. He was actually a very highly rated offical and subsequently went on and ref'd in the USFL. Agree with poster above that the east coast media who made Penn St. nat champs after getting crushed by Alabama screwed us - not going for the tie.
