Tony Eckert feature

Postby Lotus » Tue Feb 03, 2004 9:23 pm

Really nice story on Tony Eckert you guys have on your home page. It sounds like between him, the Romo kid and Chris Phillips, Coach Burns might have a real tough decision to make. Think Coach Bennett would like to have too many capable quarterbacks, rather than not enough? Sounds like Eckert is confident without being too cocky.

I'm eager to see how many of those yards he racked up at Tyler JC were the result of his receivers being fast, and how many were the result of him having a big arm. Which leads to: who is the last real deep-threat QB to play for the Ponies?

Last deep threat QB was Lance M handing off to Eric Dickerson.

Oh, I think that would be Jeff Courtwright to Booby Leach. See Record Books. Same period as Pony Express.

I thought Romo and Flannigan tossed some long balls.

Jason Wolf caught more passes than anyone in SWC history. Translation: Mike Romo could really throw.

Of course Chuck Hixon and Mike Livingston are still the best ever at SMU. Mike Ford coulda been if he hadn't blown out his knee and two guys named Dickerson and James hadn't showed up needing a veer QB.

Livvy and Meredith are the best QB's in SMU history. Hixon could really throw the ball but wasn't the deep threat that the other two were. No one else has come close to those 2. That is a long time ago my friends. Livvy's last year was 1968 - a mere 36 years ago.

I was being facious with my previous response and have no reason not to continue to do so. I think that if you check the record book the longest touchdown pass in SMU history was by Lance McElhenny. 96 yards to Craig James in Texas Stadium. Could be a longer one but I do not think so. Of course, Craig ran 90 of those yards after catching the ball.

Nope that was the one game McIlhenny missed due to injury. He was replaced by his fraternity brother Jeff Courtwright who literrally came of the intramural team to backup Mcilhenny. 96 yards to Craig James against NTSU.

My bad. I would have lost money on that bet, and I was at the game.

Had the Leach part wrong. Jeff played QB at Lake Highlands before going to SMU. He and his brother are very involved in M-Club to this day.

This post originated talking about our new QB prospect. He mentioned tht he liked to stand in the pocket and throw. Being an SMU fan, I don't understand. What is this "Pocket" he is talking about?

Hopefully Coach V will get the offensive line whipped into shape this year and we'll see the pocket hold its ground. With the speed added in the last two years of recruiting, an improved offensive line will make the whole offense a lot better.

I talked last night with ClassOf81, who was at the alumni gathering on Signing Day, and he said this Eckert guy looks like "a gunslinger" -- has a big-time arm and carries himself with a little swagger. Not bad qualities to have in a QB.

To those of you who were there: how did his arm look?
