Melvin Williams

A lot of people are saying this kid will be a stud this year, maybe the top redshirt freshman we have. He's real small for a DE, but he's supposed to be really strong, tough as hell, and never takes a play off. Rumor has it the bigger, older offensive linemen hate blocking him because he regularly beats them. Looking forward to seeing him play.

But at his size, does he have to move back to LB?

In the roster for last season, Melvin is listed as 6'1" and only 201 pounds. Has he bulked up any?

At that size, wouldn't he be a terrific MLB? Does he have any speed? If we could recruit some big DL and DE, he could end up at LB.

Fellas, wait a second. Listen to what you are saying. This is SMU and everyone plays under sized or out of position. Look at Billy Jack Williams, Chase Schavrda, Pipkins, and the list goes on. Once the coaches make up their crazy minds, they stick with it no matter how insane it is. Billy Jack would be an awesome safety, but no, stubborn coaches think he should play LB.

Melvin W has great speed, but he doesn't have the size to play DE or MLB. He's best suited to OLB, or maybe even safety, unless he's gotten a lot bigger since I last saw him.

Wherever he plays, he's a good one.

Spring 2-deep lists him as 215 lbs, so defintely a "tweener" size-wise. Sounds like a pass rush specialist to me.

I would love to see a big guy at Free Safety. A kind of Steve Atwater type player. It sounds like we have some guys like Williams who can foot that bill.
If the guy is a good pass rusher, bring him up and let him blitz as well.
We just need a dominating presence in our defensive backfield.
