Williams wants clean break from Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech running back Shaud Williams has visited Abilene Christian and plans to visit Alabama in his search for a new school, The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported Tuesday in its online edition.

Williams is allowed five official recruiting visits to colleges not restricted by the Tech team transfer policy. Coach Mike Leach's policy prohibits players from being released from their scholarships if they transfer to any other Big 12 Conference team, any other Division I-A team in Texas or the University of New Mexico.

The newspaper quoted sources as saying Williams doesn't plan to appeal Leach's restrictions after initially planning to do so.

If he changes his mind, NCAA rules say the appeal must be made within 30 days, said Shane Lyons, Tech's director of NCAA compliance.

Williams, the Big 12 offensive freshman of the year in 1999, would be able to play immediately if he transfers to Abilene Christian, an NCAA Division II school. If he transferred to Alabama, he would have to sit out a year.

Williams rushed for 658 yards on 112 carries in 1999. But Tech changed to a pass-oriented offense in 2000 and Williams rushed for 223 yards on 55 carries in 2000. He caught 48 passes for 299 yards.

He was a 13th-round baseball draft pick by the Atlanta Braves in 1999.

This is all fine and somewhat interesting, but what relevance does it have to us? Last time I looked, we are a Div-1 school located in Texas and as such we are on his restricted list.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

The guy's a stud. Chuck Cooperstein once said he was the most talented back they had, better than Ricky Williams. Any way we can get in on the sweepstakes? He and Briggs would make a nice 1-2 punch.

Yeah...move SMU out of the State.
