Joyner Named NFF Gridiron Club Of Dallas Collegiate Scholar-Athlete
Four-year SMU linebacker earns academic honor

April 9, 2014

DALLAS (SMU) - Former SMU linebacker Randall Joyner has been named a 2014 National Football Foundation Gridiron Club of Dallas Collegiate Scholar-Athlete, the foundation announced. The SMU senior will be honored with eight other college athletes and 54 high school athletes on April 14 at the chapter's sixth-annual banquet at the Marriott Quorum in Addison, Texas.

Joyner, who was a Conference-USA All-Academic Team selection in 2012, played in 50 career games in his four years at SMU, starting 18 for the Mustangs. In 2013, Joyner led the Mustangs with 98 tackles, including 49 solo, five tackles for loss and one sack. Joyner recorded double-digit tackles three times in 2013, including a career-high 18 tackles against Rutgers. The Carrolton, Texas, native was second on the team in tackles in 2012 with 93.

The Mustang linebacker was named a Campbell Trophy Semifinalist on Oct. 2, and a 2013 Preseason American Athletic Conference Third Team selection.

The selection committee, comprised of coaches, teachers, administrators and business leaders from North Texas evaluated the college and high school candidates based on their athletic accomplishments, academic performance and leadership in the community.

Joyner is set to graduate in May of 2014 with a degree in applied physiology and sport management. In the community, Joyner spent several hours with seriously ill children at the Ronald McDonald House, in addition to hours with Read Across America Day and Story Time Saturday's at the Central Market.

I loved watching him play - always had so much fire. That's a guy who will be successful, no matter what he does.
