Their AD didn't give a timetable for the program's extinction so it's possible June could swoop in to save them once again.

I can't imagine what it must cost UH teams for travel every year.

BYU-Hawaii recently dropped all sports. A different level, but their programs were very successful and they had the LDS $$ behind them

They did that at BYU-Idaho as well, so it may be a philosophical decision.

There's no way they're cutting the football program unless they're shutting down their athletic department in total. Whatever they make off of TV money in the MWC now would become $0, and then they'd have to beg a lower-tier conference like the WCC to let them in for the other sports. I can't imagine that Hawaii's other sports would generate enough revenue for the WCC (or anyone else) that they would take them. In other words, killing football would make their deficit MUCH worse.

If they want to save money and lessen their deficit they should be cutting non-revenue sports. I'm betting the AD is trying to manipulate the big donors, the fans, or even the state to support the program better. The other thing he could be up to is cutting some other programs. "Well we talked about cutting the football program, but X Regent suggested cutting swimming instead."

Revenue sports won't be cut. Heck, for football you only have to travel 5-7 times per year, anyway. Can you imagine the volleyball travel budget?
