Wildcats Team Report

Spring update
FEBRUARY 28, 2001

BIG-TIME BATTLE
One of the nation's most intriguing quarterback battles looms in Manhattan. Sophomore Ell Roberson and junior Marc Dunn, considered by many to be the nation's top JC recruit, will duke it out. This battle might continue in the fall. The rest of the offense is in good shape. On the line, seniors Andy Eby and John Robertson are back at the guard slots, but Eby could slide to center to take over for departed Randall Cummins. Junior Steve Washington, senior Matt Martin or redshirt freshman Chris Boggas could fill Milford Stephenson's tackle spot. Senior Thomas Barnett is back at the other tackle spot. In the fall, JC lineman Dralinn Burks will arrive with more help.

Even with David Allen gone, the running back spot looks fine with senior Josh Scobey, who came on late last year.

Quincy Morgan and Martez Wesley will be missed at wideout, but senior Aaron Lockett is a playmaker and boffo return man. Holdovers senior Brandon Clark, sophomore Derrick Evans and senior Ricky Lloyd look to make an impact this spring. In the fall, incoming freshman stud Jerome Janet could take time, as might JC transfer Lawrence "Taco" Wallace.

BRING ON THE NEW GUYS
With corners Dyshod Carter and Jerametrius Butler and strong safety Jarrod Cooper gone, the secondary will get some attention. Look for senior DeRon Tyler and junior Terence Newman to take over at corner. Each has experience in nickel situations. JC transfers James Dunnigan, who already is on campus, and Bobby Walker will offer more support at corner. The coaches will move senior Jon McGraw from free safety to strong to replace Cooper, and senior Derrick Yates will take over at free safety. Senior utilityman Milton Proctor adds even more depth and experience.

DEFENSIVE LINE DEVELOPMENT
The K-State coaches will need to focus on the defensive line with tackle Mario Fatafehi and ends Chris Johnson and Monty Beisel gone. Senior tackle DeVane Robinson is the lone holdover starter. In the fall, JC tackles Henry Bryant and 5-11, 280-pound Allen "Tank" Reese will arrive. For now, the staff feels senior Jerry Togiai can take over for Fatafehi. This spring also will be the chance for sophomore Andrew Shull and junior Melvin Williams to make noise at end. There are fewer questions at linebacker thanks to senior middle man Ben Leber. The coaches are fired up about sophomore outside guy Terry Pierce. Junior Andy Klocke and sophomore Josh Buhl also can make names for themselves.

But the kicking may not be decided until the fall, when mega recruit Joe Rheem, brother of departed Jamie, arrives. JC transfer Rick Gerla will battle junior Travis Brown for punting duties.

Normally, I would say that playing a team with a new QB would be a good thing. But if those two guys are as good as advertised, and fighting for a job, they might come into the season sharper than most first-time QBs.

Josh Scobey scares me. The kid is a big strong runner with good speed. Behind that massive offensive line, he could give us problems -- real problems. Our defensive line needs to do a great job tying up the blockers so Vic Viloria, D.D. Lee and Jarrian James can fly to the ball and make tackles.
