Season Openers Under June

Postby GreenbeltPony » Sun Aug 31, 2014 9:43 pm

I was wondering why I've been feeling a sense of deja vu for the past few hours so I took a quick look at history:

2008: @ Rice, L 27-56
2009: vs. SFA, W 31-23
2010: @ TT, L 27-35
2011: @ A&M, L 14-46
2012: @ Baylor, L 24-59
2013: vs. TT, L 23-41
2014: @ Baylor, L 0?-???

...we haven't even kept it competitive in most of these games.

Season Openers Under June

Isn't that a better record in first games than Bennet had?

it's all about scheduling. If JJ had his way, we would open against a weak FCS opponent every year

Does that even matter? Regardless of the coach or prior history, is it too much to ask for at least an upwards trend in competitiveness over 6 years?

I guess Bennett should have scheduled a D1AA opponent to get a win.

June would be a great fit as a coach or even the AD with DISD.

Lots of fake "support" for athletes that need it, and he is plenty willing to simply demand that the bar be lowered rather than demand excellence.

Anybody who is surprised by this did not follow June's career.

Here are his season openers at Hawaii:
September 4, 1999 Southern California L 62-7
September 9, 2000 Portland State (FCS) L 20-45
September 8, 2001 Montana (FCS) W 30–12
August 31, 2002 Eastern Illinois (FCS) W 61–36
August 30, 2003 Appalachian State (FCS) W 40–17
September 5, 2004 Florida Atlantic L 28-35
September 3, 2005 USC L 17–63
September 2, 2006 Alabama L 25–17
September 1, 2007 Northern Colorado (FCS) W 63-6

Notice that all 4 wins came against FCS teams. He was blown out by USC twice, and lost to FCS Portland State and provisional FBS Florida Atlantic. His best result was a close game against an Alabama team that would finish 6-7 in 2006.

Want more? Here is his record in season openers when he was with the Falcons:

September 4, 1994 Detroit Lions L 28–31 (OT)
September 3, 1995 Carolina Panthers W 23–20
September 1, 1996 Carolina Panthers L 6–29

Hooray he managed to win one! Hopefully nobody will remember that the team he beat by a field goal was playing their first real game EVER. It was an expansion team built in the offseason, completely new players, coaches, everything.

The bottom line is that June Jones can't, won't, doesn't prepare like other coaches do. He is all smoke and mirrors.

To be consistent, you need to post the record of the preseason games with the Falcons.
