It was a sunk cost.
His extension gave the appearance to those not "in the know" that he was not a lame duck. Definitely a silver lining that it blew up on us early in the season.

I've seen you say this a couple of times before, so now I need to ask, how certain are you of your information? I ask because my understanding has always been very different, and I have no reason to doubt it. The CoC raised the money for the first 5 years, Junes initial contract. The next two years, his extension which includes this season, has to be covered by the school.

How about you begin with using some simple common sense and quit with the "SMU didn't pay for the HC"? Yes, SMU is paying for the coach because that money was designated for the coach. It doesn't matter where it was sourced from, it depends what it was allocated for.

And if you're trying to be cute with your maroon comment, try a little better and be more creative.

Honestly, that was really embarrassing when he came out and said we should play in the spring. June might as well have flown to Rhode Island and kicked Mike Aresco in the nuts.
