The only coach I can think of who was successful with going going JUCO heavy to turn something around was Snyder.

Big problem facing the new coach will be the NCAA's revised academic requirements for the 2016 class. As I recall they increased the clearing house eligiblity standard from a high school GPA standard of 2.00 up to a 2.25 and the SAT from 900 to 950. If these standards were applied to FBS recruiting for the class of 2014 then 42 % of all football and 39 % of all basketball players would not have been cleared. As a result, the recruiting competition for 2016 is going to be much tougher as the pool of players has been reduced by 40%. One could argue that the high schools will play/cheat with the GPA standards and that may be true, but they cannot control the SAT.

actually it is just for freshman eligibility. Players not making a 2.3 core GPA and a corresponding SAT will have a mandatory freshman redshirt-but they can receive a scholarship. Since we are talking JUCOs-they now need a 2.5 GPA rather than 2.0. Here's a good summary of all changes

ï‚· The minimum core course GPA has increased from 2.00 to 2.30
ï‚· 10 of the 16 core course requirements must be satisfied prior to the start of the senior year
ï‚· 7 of those 10 core courses must be from the English, Math and Science subsections
ï‚· Grades earned in the 10 core courses are "locked in" for the purpose of calculating the final core course GPA
ï‚· Any retakes of the first 10 core courses must be completed prior to senior year
The NCAA has also introduced a new status for the class of 2016 - the "Academic Redshirt." An “Academic Redshirt” may receive a scholarship and practice with their team, but may not participate in game competition as a college freshman. Students with a GPA of 2.30 or above may achieve either “Academic Redshirt” or “Full Qualifier” status, depending on their SAT/ACT test scores. Students with a core course GPA between 2.00 and 2.29 cannot attain “Full Qualifier” status but may achieve “Academic Redshirt” status by meeting minimum sliding scale test score requirements.
The new sliding SAT/ACT scale results in significant changes in minimum test score requirements. The minimum SAT score required to compete as a college freshman increased by 180 points while the minimum ACT score increased by an average of 14 points (sum score).

You know it will be interesting to see how new coaches handle the new 2016 academic requirements. Can you really afford to run a bunch of players off when about half your freshman class may have to be mandatory freshman redshirts. Say you have 60 returning players-you run off 10-12. Recruit 25 new recruits half of which are academic redshirt-of the remaining 12 recruits-half aren't physically mature enough to play. That would leave a team with 54 players-pretty damn thin. Probably better that SMU will have a new coach in 2015 rather than 2016
