Jerry Gray, former Texas AHC?

Postby gomemphistigers1 » Tue Oct 21, 2014 10:47 am

I know Memphis almost hired him to be HC awhile back...

asst NFL coach at Titans, Bills, Redskins, Vikings...

Former Asst Head Coach at Texas...

From Lubbock TX...his son plays at SMU

Seems like a comfortable pick.

Jerry was my neighbor for several years in Austin [many years ago when he played for the
Rams]. He is a smart, very professional guy. A really good person. And very well thought of in the coaching world.

His first coaching job was at SMU. IMHO he would be an excellent recruiter.

He definitely merits consideration.

I remember him when he was coaching at SMU with HC Forrest Gregg. Both were very good guys. Boy that seems like an eternity ago.

There is some guy out there at a smaller school that we don't know about. A guy who does things right and knows how to succeed and is ready to carry it up to the next level. The next Hugh Freeze, Gary Patterson, James Franklin, Sumlin, Bill Snyder....all guys who were unknowns or assistant coaches laying in the bushes waiting for a chance. What kind of personality did Snyder have? None but he knew that you take care of business on a day to day basis the right way with no shortcuts and the wins will come. SMU people seem to want to take a shortcut and get a coach with a name. It takes more than that. It takes a guy with passion who has football as his number one priority in life. (I know that is wrong but those guys are winners).

Jerry Gray once made me cry and crushed my dream :(

"Gray, who is a junior and may be the best player on the unit, batted down a pass on a 2-point conversion attempt that would have given S.M.U. a 14-13 lead."

http://www.nytimes.com/1983/10/27/sport ... -toll.html
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.

There are several ways to look at this.

Sure we want a "short-cut" if it works out like Larry Brown.
So sometimes it doesn't take more than that.
But admittedly Larry Brown was probably one in a million.

The downside to the way you advise...it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Sure it can work beautifully...Patterson, ect...but it can also be very high risk.
Many times across the country it ends like Bennett & Cavan.
Most unknown hires do not turn into Gary Patterson Rose Bowls.

However I am not opposed to a splash name hire or an unknown hire.

Just hope either way we go....the guy has very strong Texas ties.

I definitely remember him when Coach Gregg was here. Was he a volunteer or something and then hired by Rossley?
