You're right it is two different sports. We have no chance whatsoever to gain complete control of Dallas no matter how well we do in football. And it is a massive overstatement to suggest that every football fan in Texas would want to catch our games just because of Mack Brown. Mack won't be a draw here unless he wins big, same as any other coach. Like you said we won't gain back any of this market for the Big 12.

Bevo and OU not Bevo or OU. Try to read the whole thing next time

Yeah UT has been drawing poorly recently, as bad as the low tier big 12 (TV wise in DFW area). People in Dallas will tune in to watch good football, which is why they tuned into TCU-BU instead of OU-Bevo

I meant that Mack brown coaching a top 25 SMU team would draw big numbers

Anybody consider MB's string ESPN ties - LHN and current commentator seat. This might be as valuable as his connections with TX HS coaches.

Getting ESPN behind us might change our position in the futures market.

Indeed. This is a very strategic move by SMU if we do get MB.

A lot of schools will continue to play football outside of the P5, and no particular reason to believe that we wouldn't be one of them (although we wouldn't be paying coaches the type of money that is now being discussed if the situation becomes hopeless). I actually think that basketball will drive a commitment to our current conference if it can hold together. To think that Mack Brown is the key to P5 is delusional. In fact, a $32 M commitment to Mack is too much like putting the whole bankroll on one throw of the dice for me. If he fails, too many resources will have been eaten up by the Brown household.

If we move up in conferences it won't be to big12. We add nothing. It'll be to another conference looking to get in Dallas. Maybe if the Big12 was very scared of another conference gaining a foothold in Dallas we would be attractive to the big12 but that bizarre scenario would pretty much have to be the SEC, and the number of games happening at Jerry world would seem to cancel any tiny chance to move to SEC we might have had

Jerry Jones has turned Arlington into an SEC venue. The conference probably has all the position in North Texas that it needs.

Good football draws ratings. TCU added no new physical market but they sold themselves into the Big 12 by their track record and the fact that eyeballs come when you have some good football. TCU argued that people will watch a good team play and that they bring Big 12 teams another game in DFW. SMU would bring the same as TCU and has way more upside than they will ever have.

We will not get into the Big XII. Its all about maps. They have to be eyeing a FSU, VT/GT, Clemson coup. However, if we right the ship in football, and continue to be strong in hoops, then I suspect, SMU and Houston might be viewed as teams that expand certain other conferences into Texas. ACC, B1G, and P12. We are a better fit with the ACC and the P12 than the B1G. We would certainly be attractive to the ACC if they get raided by the Big XII. Then all they have are: UVA, Louisville, UNC, Pitt, VT/GT, NCSU, Duke, U, Syracuse, BC, WF. Plenty of private schools, plus UVA which thinks its a private school.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a chance we eventually make it into Big 12.

You just won't recognize it by the time we get there.

After paying initiation fee of 12 Million, the Western Division will eventually be composed of UH, Tulsa, Tulane, SMU and Memphis

Here's what Mack brings to the table at SMU:
-High school recruiting - he can sweet talk any high school junior's mama at the kitchen table.
-Glad handing rich white dudes - He'll massage the egos of your millionaire and pick their pockets to boot.

Here's the downside:
-While his recruiting is good, his evaluations, especially the last five years or so of his tenure at Texas was bad. I shouldn't say HIS evaluations are bad but the assistant coaches he surrounded himself with who actually did the evaluations were bad. If recruiting were an NCAA event, Texas would have been a top 3 program under brown but unfortunately for him, these high flying recruiting classes radically underperformed the last five years or so.

-He doesn't coach. For the last five years or so, he was the Grand Poobah of a program that was only as good as his assistant coach hires. So if you want this to work, you need to make a big budget for assistant coaches and you may still end up with Manny Diaz, Greg Davis or the latest greatest young wizard from Boise State whoever that is. On game day, he was always just a glorified cheer leader.

-His programs were always infused and corrupted by good ole boys. He recruits and keeps players and coaches for the wrong reasons. As a result, his teams were undisciplined on the field.

-At Texas, he never even tried to develop underperforming players. The under performers were just cut and replaced by high school recruits. If he tried to do the same thing at SMU, even if successful would take years to improve things.

I'd say Brown would be an improvement from Jones (who wouldn't be) but SMU doesn't need a Grand Poobah it needs a coach, one that can develop players and elevate their play and one with recruiting channels in JUCOs. SMU needs a coach that can make a bad team mediocre. After you get average, then you should go for a Mack Brown type.

The last point I'll make is that this is just a bunch of bullcrap to placate your big-money alumni.
