SMU now much mentioned on the web

Postby Oldmins » Thu Oct 23, 2014 5:17 pm

Check into any of the ESPN or YAHOO or CBS or NBC or school fan forum discussions about the North Carolina situation, and you'll find the SMU death penalty subject continually mentioned. The North Carolina situation is worse than anything the SMU administration did back in the '80's, they say, so NC should get the DP in all major sports. Amazing how often this comparison comes up.

Baseball got it's own death penalty in 1980 and track&field in 2006. We are masters of disaster.

You have to violate the NCAA rules twice in 5 years to be eligible for the DP. I don't know if that is the case at UNC. If you think SMU wasn't fixing grades back then you are out of your mind.

The UNC situation isn't just fixing grades, it's having players enrolled in fake classes. Not to mention over a period of 18 years.

They violated rules continuously for 18 years. Certainly there are two instances within 5 years.

My understanding is you have to be sanctioned once then caught a second time within 5 years. Otherwise every team that gets in trouble would be eligible for the death penalty because it never boils down to just one infraction

Penn State was considered for a 4 year death penalty but were allowed to buy their way out of it. Weren't sanctioned in the 5 years before.

They were charged in 2012 for extra benefits to players, lost a bowl game
