Roster notes

Postby PonyPride » Sun Feb 22, 2015 4:31 pm

At least two new players are working out this spring with the team as walk-ons:

Chase Schultz
A 2013 graduate of Rockwall-Heath HS who went to Louisiana Tech before transferring to SMU. A unanimous first team all-district honoree as he led his team to the playoffs in its first year at the 5A level ... Threw for 1,931 passing yards and 15 touchdowns as he was 171-for-263 with six interceptions ... Also ran for 500 yard and five touchdowns as a HS senior.
Listed on LaTech's roster at 6-1, 202 pounds

Jon Werthen
Freshman from Tulsa (Holland Hall), Okla.
Linebacker who also played running back in high school
2014: 6-0, 210, 4.65

Also, Jerry Saena, who will be a sophomore in the fall, said he will enter spring workouts playing guard, at least in part because of the new coaches' desire to get players with size and flexibility in the interior of the offensive line. Playing with his hand down in a three-point stance will not be unfamiliar to Saena, who played out of a three-point stance as a high school player in Pago Pago, American Samoa.

Looks like a preferred walk on for long snapper:

Per @TheChrisRubio, Lake Travis LS Garrett Stotts (@garrettstottsLS) has committed to #SMU as a preferred walk-on. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1900648/garrett-stotts …

Moving Jerry to guard seems like a good idea. He's a big guy and looks like he can get even bigger and stronger. Love to see the line getting bigger, and now it will be interesting to see how he does making the transition.

I agree, big, crazy strong dude. i remember his PF interview after he got here and he kept talking about loving hitting, and his favorite part of practice was hitting (june tricked him there). Hope he figures it out, because I love the kids attitude.

Given the high motor these coaches seem to run on, he will get plenty of chances to show if he can hit.

He is moving to guard for the same reason all tackles move inside, not quick enough to play on the edge.

The coaches all thought he should be on the oline, but he wanted to play defense. It could be that he wanted to be aggressive, and the new running, physical style of offense suits him better. We will see. Keep your eye on Myers also. He needs to stay inside because he is really slow on his back drop, but he can be physical as well.

I asked Saena which position he preferred, which he would choose if he had the choice of all three (offensive tackle, guard and defensive tackle). He did want to try defense a year ago, but he sure seemed enthusiastic about being on the offensive line now and working with new offensive line coach Dustin Fry.

Also: when packing up the camera after that interview, Trumain Carroll added a few interesting comments:
* He said he hadn't had the players max out yet, but based on what people were lifting in sets during workouts, the strongest player on the team in the bench press might be RB Prescott Line.
* He called OT Bo Antunovic "the most powerful player I have ever trained — I didn't have anyone with that much power at Oklahoma State."
* When I asked him who was the strongest player, pound for pound, he hesitated before saying the first two that came to mind were Antinovic and TE Jeremiah Gaines. He said there were a few others in the conversation, but those two jumped to mind.
* When asked about leg lifts, Carroll said a lot of players were "moving a lot of weight," but off the top of his head, he cited DE Zach Wood, TE Justin Lawler and OL William Barns.

Or at least teach him how to block field goals or something

I was hoping that they would move him to DL in the new 4-2-5. With a few basic pass rushing techniques, he could be a heck of a pass rushing specialists

On the OL, it his hard to imagine that he learns enough (fast enough) to ever see the field.

he played or rather sat his first year at OLM. Then sat his 2nd year at DLM. Isn't he about 360 or something. SMU will have to call a timeout after 3 tempo fast break plays in the Morris offense to get him off the field. Wake me up when he gets his weight down-then we'll know if he's serious about playing

Exactly. These guys are remnants of the June nonsense. Jerry was one of his gifts to the 'islands'. Bo is a super freak track athlete but no football player. Again, this is Jones trying to prove how smart he was by trying to create the next Margus. Margus was a fluke, not some product of the wonderful Jones football staff. Neither will ever see the field as Morris starts to recruit HIS type of O-Linemen. Next.
