the ncaa is there to make money and "protect the rules". It has little to do with people. Like newspapers, it seems to be headed to the ash heap of athletics in the near future. Good riddance.

NCAA is there to protect the money flow to the big state schools. Everyone else is just in the way.

Is someone took the right view of this, compiled a list of proven school violations that have gone unpunished or where punishment was reversed or lessened, then compared it to schools or students punished because of situations like this, and published that as a national media campaign directed at both the fan and at members of congress, that would be fun. Might also be productive. Combine this with someones school missing out on a big payday because of the playoff voting fraud board, and you might get another Hatch review of NCAA compliance with labor standards et al. Hit them in their PR pocketbook and someone might actually force a change.

I've seen this nonsense from the NCAA before. A friend of the family was the head of the salvation army in upstate NY. Syracuse had a football player and his kid brother who were orphans. In order for the Salvation army to give a meal or winter coat (a useful item in Syracuse, NY) to the younger brother they needed to get written permission from the NCAA each time. In order for the older brother to receive any financial aid from NY State to care for his brother, the older brother needed to get special permission from the NCAA (that only took 8 months). The younger brother wasn't allowed in the cafeteria on campus or in the dorms, because there was a chance another student might allow him to nap on their couch or give him a slice of pizza.

The only way to get an education was to keep the football scholarship. The only way to keep his brother out of foster homes (BTW the NCAA had to approve the foster home because they might be a SU Booster) was give up the scholarship.

Eventually the NYS Attorney General's Office stepped in. They had the political clout to get a reasonable solution.

Anytime I start to think the NCAA isn't a total piece of [Gary Patterson]. I think of these two kids.

I remember a story about a player who had sole custody of his younger brother due to a terrible family situation, and the NCAA wouldn't let him take donations of even the basic necessities for his younger brother until there was enough public shaming of the NCAA.

Baylor compliance had told him to he needed to stop or he would be out of compliance with the NCAA. The kid didn't stop. Not saying that I agree with the NCAA but there is more to the story.
