PonyFans.com Q&A: Linebacker Anthony Rhone

Postby PonyPride » Wed Apr 01, 2015 12:31 am

In the early stages of spring workouts, one of the players who has assumed a leadership role with the new SMU defense is sophomore-to-be linebacker Anthony Rhone, who has been making numerous plays in practice, and also is making the calls for the defensive front in a system that closely resembles the system in which he played in high school. Rhone visited with PonyFans.com to discuss how new defensive coordinator Van Malone and linebackers coach Archie McDaniel break up the teaching assignments, and how his father, longtime Miami Dolphins linebacker Earnest Rhone, still contributes to his growth on and off the field.

"No. I didn’t get that much experience last year — I wasn’t a redshirt, but I only played a few repetitions."

Ah, judicious use of the red-shirt option. Bet he/we'll be glad they traded a few meaningless snaps for an entire senior year down the road.

PP, thanks for a good interview. Anthony wasn't on my radar as an impact player for our D next season, but he now is. Can't wait to see him and the rest of the team in action during the Spring Game.

Knew he was going to be a good one from his pedigree and ridiculously productive high school career.

If he can really take on that commander in chief role now, imagine what he'll be like as a senior.

Sounds like an impressive young man.

He has been good enough at practice that I kind of wonder if he was the player Morris was referring to when he talked about not burning a redshirt just to give a player a few snaps.

Doesn't matter. What matter is those who are here to coach and play for SMU.
Sounds like Rhone is going to be a key player for a few years.
