I hope this is accurate. GB is the only pro team (I think) that is owned by fans and not private ownership. Gotta love that.

It doesn't hurt that their g.m. is former Pony linebacker Ted Thompson.

Leigh Steinberg reporting on his Facebook page that GG was claimed by the Lions today --->

"GARRETT GILBERT IS A LION--QB Garrett Gilbert, who was waived by New England yesterday due to Brady's suspension and the need for an experienced QB behind Garrapolo, was claimed today by the Detroit Lions. Go get em, Garrett!"

They're owned by the city. Every time they do one of those stock issuing things to raise money, it's just symbolic. And yes, they're the only major pro sports franchise that is considered as owned by a public entity.

Actually, they are owned by Green Bay Packers, Inc. which in turn has approximately 360,000 stockholders, none of which are allowed to own more than 4% of the outstanding shares. When they do have new stock issuances, you actually are buying stock in Green Bay Packers, Inc.

As for being the "only major pro sports franchise" owned by the public, I believe you are right if you limit it to the USA. The Celtics have been private for over a decade now. Of course, if you look internationally, there are many more examples of major pro sports franchises that are publicly owned.

Yeah I meant in the US. And when they issue stock to raise money, it's symbolic. You don't get any dividends, but it does entitle you to come to the annual owners meeting. I'm specifically talking about when they mass issue it and anyone can buy it. Pretty brilliant actually.

For a while, I was an owner of Manchester United, but I would love to figure out how to buy 100 shares of Arsenal. Sadly, the Oligarch doesn't need my money.
