"SMU, like Houston, suffers from the problem of the Big 12 possibly not wanting to add another Texas squad who was in the Southwest Conference. However, unlike Houston, SMU’s basketball team has been on the rise, and an even bigger recruiting pipeline in Dallas could be a positive for the conference. The Mustangs have struggled in football, but with a storied past pre-death penalty, SMU could bring prestige to an 11th or 12th team in the Big 12 that other schools might not."

This is spot on. The way SMU would add value is by being competitive in the rev sports. Prestige is what we bring to big 12, SMU has been there and done that. Need to prove we can run the American in football too, for basketball we are expected to be the class of the conference this year too

The Big 12 isn’t pushing for mandatory scheduling bylaws, but matchups against lesser opponents are putting marquee Big 12 scheduling into an interesting bind, Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said.

Texas teams in particular were a subject that Bowlsby discussed with GetMoreSports.com. With Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas and TCU paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to play regional rivals such as UNT, UTEP, SMU and Rice, it’s challenging to find room for higher-marquee names, the commissioner said. However, Bowlsby did not want to interrupt traditional rivalries.

“TCU and Baylor are playing SMU often – a team that’s not that strong,” Bowlsby said. “It hurts them to have [SMU] on their schedule, yet you would never advocate to end that kind of tradition.”
