ESPN: June frontrunner for Hawaii HC

Hearing former Hawaii coach June Jones is in lead to reclaim the job. Tulsa co-defensive coordinator Brian Norwood and Nevada offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich are also in the mix as Hawaii narrows its candidate pool. Both Rolovich and Norwood played at Hawaii, and Rolovich was an assistant there from 2008-11.

At least when he takes his extended vacations during recruiting season he'll still be in the same state as the campus.

With 7 home games every year June can fix things so he can go to the Hawaii bowl some years. If Hawaii expects more, they will be very disappointed. Then he will start complaining and rig it so he gets paid for not coaching.

I will make the same point I made when SMU hired Tubbs as basketball coach: if your school is the only school in America that would hire a particular coach, should you really consider hiring the guy?

actually with a 13 game season UH can fit in 8 home games plus a Bowl-=9 home games like they did several times in his tenure. I think I calculated he played 68-69% home games

Hell, it's where he wants to be.

All SMU bias aside, he never should have left the islands. I recently read an article on Hawaii's current football troubles and they mentioned how he won there. He embraced their history and culture, recruited heavily in the islands, and built the product locally - all the stuff he didn't do here. If he had kept his [deleted] there they'd probably still be winning - only he would have made, that entire time, the same amount he made with us in a single year. From his standpoint, if he's got anything left in the tank he should get the job.

The spread has taken off since 2007...defenses are now very well equipped to shut down his Run n Shoot offense

Yeah, because NOBODY had seen a Run-n-shoot offense before he took over at Hawaii.

The biggest issue he had with us was that he didn;t recruit. He actually gave a damn at UH and recruited there and it showed. The reason Georgia embarrassed their asses at the Sugar Bowl wasn't because the Bulldogs had discovered the magic solution to his offense, it was because they had flat-out better talent.

I stand by my statement: He gave a [deleted] at Hawaii and not SMU, and he could have kept them competitive.

You're overlooking one key detail - when he left Hawaii he was making 800k per, lil ole SMU put 2 million in his account each year with no state income tax. It was all about the money.
