It's taken a lot of 'heartache,' but Morris' SMU team using 'mental toughness' to finish year strong

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Coach Chad Morris is not making big changes to SMU's schedule for the holiday week.

In fact, with school closing, the Mustangs will be able to extend their meetings, maybe spend more time breaking down film. And besides, after Wednesday's team dinner, if players have nowhere to go for Thanksgiving, well, Chez Morris will be open.

"They'll have a place to go, whether it's to a player's house or a coach's house. There won't be anybody spending Thanksgiving by themselves, I know that."

Having stayed on course during an eight-game losing streak, the Mustangs finally got the complete game they were searching for in a 49-21 victory over Tulane last week.

Feeding the players? This sounds like an impermissible benefit like Burgers and Cheer.

I was wondering about that. Can coaches provide meals off campus?

Yes, June got the players donuts or something like that after a win.

That is not the same. When traveling you get fed. These kids are on campus. Rules may have changed and I hope they have but this is what always has given coaches fits. Giving a kid a ride to the airport to go home. Buying a kid a burger cause he was alone and hungry. There are many stories. I am sure it is done a lot but if not legal they should not be talking about it.

"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
