2016 OL Analysis

Postby Digetydog » Thu Jan 28, 2016 3:41 pm

Although I could not figure out how to get the spreadsheet to format correctly, you can probably figure out the number that goes under each heading.
Note: I didn't try to predict "Letters" from 2015; however, it is pretty easy to figure out.

Analysis:
1) Seniors (2012) - 2 of 5 players made meaningful contributions in 2015.
2) Juniors (2013) - No production in 2015 -> unlikely to provide much production in 2016
3) Soph (2014) - Although they were undersized coming in, many of them were able to gain weight and provide some help in 2015. Nobody looks like a potential All-AAC caliber player.
4) Fresh (2015) - three RS's for 2015. Hyder and Bates need to compete for starting jobs. McNeill was June's recruit.
5) We are going to need some of our true freshman to compete for playing time in 2016.

Other Takeaways:
1) Some of our OL have lost weight since they arrived.
2) Essentially, our staring OL will be composed of our 2014-2015 recruiting classes.
3) We had one 3 star OL in 2012-2015. He is medically retired.

In two recruiting classes, June landed one starter and Briggs hasn't exactly dominated.

There was at least one of the interviews last spring where Morris essentially said we that have 15 guys, and you can't tell them apart.

This is what actually killed the previous coaching staff. 2008 - 2013 were a disaster recruiting on the OL. Here are the oline recruits from day 1:

2008 - Boyd, Chase, Emshoff, Free, Huahulu, McJunkin, Nwangu, Robiskie
2009 - Atchinson, Collins, Favreau, Fontana, Hughes, Miller
2010 - Duhe, Gottshaulk
2011 - Lasecki, Livingston, Reich, Weeks

It is absolutely staggering how few quality OL developed out of that bunch.
Then we got unlucky in 2011 with Livingston and Reich, and unlucky again in 2012 with Rice transferring and Myers having issues. So even the Klemm group didn't have the expected impact.

I actually think things got better at the end with McCarty, Barns, Brown, Hyder, Pursley, but none of those are talent levels you want on the field day one... they are all "they will be solid as a RS junior and senior" type of guys. McCarty is the only one of that group who is entering his fourth year on campus and should be competing for a starting spot. The fact that the others are being forced to start is a reflection of the lack of impact of the classes of 2012 and 2013.

Remember - that 2007 OL class had two NFL players and 3 very good conference players and still wasn't that great until the second part of 2009 into 2010. Even they needed 2.5 to 3 years on campus to get their bodies right and get up to speed with the college game.

Until I looked at the numbers, I didn't realize how bad the 2012-13 classes hurt us or how much the 2014 class contributed last year.

The good news, we should be able to field 8-10 290'ers in the Fall w/o forcing any of the true freshman into the abyss. Of course, all the jobs are up for grabs and I would not be shocked to see a true freshman on the 2-deep.

Gottschalk and Collins were good players for us. And Livingston did very well when he transferred and started. In the end when we got Palcic (who got fired from UCLA for not recruiting well) as OL coach recruiting got worse than it had been. The disaster was when Klemm left and we started recruiting players with UTSA and UNT offers. When June got here he had a lot of redshirt freshmen on the team from Bennet's 2007 class at OL and they all played very well from the beginning, it was just the Bo Levi keep throwing unforced int's because he was getting good protection. When all of Bennett's lineman graduated all of the June smoke and mirrors were gone and Palcic did not help.

I think our OL play will be dramatically improved next year if you can project the same off season development we have heard about with coach Tru.

Way too early projection for OL:

LT: Pursley (he is going to be a very good player) Hopefully he comes in at 300lbs
LG: Chauncey Briggs
C: Braylon Hyder (need him to drop weight and come in at 300)
RG: Evan Brown
RT: Bryce Wilds

Kadarius Smith and Tadora should make the 2 deep and push for time. Always a good idea to RS OL as most are not physically ready to play, unfortunately, we don't have that luxury.
