SMU players in Super Bowls

Postby LA_Mustang » Tue Feb 02, 2016 10:19 pm

How many SMU players have won a Super Bowl? I hope ES has a big game and gets a championship. Was Morstead on the Saints the year they won?

Forrest Gregg was named to the 50th all time super bowl team by some writer.

Off the top of my head.

Forrest Gregg
Bill Forrester

Craig James
Raymond Berry

Michael Carter

Lamar Hunt
Hank Stram

I dont think Craig James was ever on the winning side in the Super Bowl, the Patriots lost to the Bears in 85, and I think that was the only time he played in the championship game. Reggie Phillips was on the Bears team that beat them, though, he even returned an interception for a TD in the 3rd quarter. ALbert Reese got a Super Bowl ring with the Redskins, and Dale Hellestrae got 3 with the Cowboys. Mitch Willis played for the Raiders around the time they beat the Redskins in SB 18, but not sure if that was his rookie year, or the year before he was drafted.

Correct, Berry coached the James-led Patriots team that lost to the Bears.

Trivia question, who did Coach Berry replace as HC?

The Bears beat the LA Rams in the NFC championship game in 1985. If not for that, we would have seen Dickerson vs James in the Super Bowl that year. In the end, the Bears took care of them both.

Was listing SMU players in the Super Bowl and didn't realize LA meant just winners.

I had no idea Albert Reese got a ring. He was a Hoss at SMU.

Hellestrae sure made a good living of a special skill.

Do you think we got them all? Seems like there would be one or two more. If we made a list of SMU players in Pre Super Bowl NFL championship game would be a much longer list.

Sterling Moore sent NE to Super Bowl XLVI with his pass breakup in the AFC Championship, and his Pats were oh so close to winning that Super bowl.

I know what you mean, I have this feeling that I'm leaving someone out, but cant put my finger on it. Reggie Dupard played for both the Redskins and Patriots, but I dont think he was with either in their Super Bowls years. Same with Ron Morris and Da Bears.

You may not have noticed Albert with the Redskins, because they moved him to offensive line. He wasn't as well known for it as Hellestrae, but Reese could deep snap on punts and field goals, and that earned him a job. The Browns also moved Ricky Bolden to tackle, so both the tight ends from that era became offensive linemen in the NFL, slightly ironic.

Donald Mitchell played but didn't win with the Titans

Edit : I guess not.. I think he was drafted in 99 which would've been three months after the super bowl
