Red Defeats Blue In SMU Spring Game
Aphonso Thomas, Joseph Paden Went Over Century Mark On The Ground

April 16, 2016

DALLAS (SMU) -- Freshman Aphonso Thomas and senior Joseph Paden both broke the century mark on the ground as the offense defeated the defense, 45-35, in the SMU Football Spring Game on Saturday. The game featured a modified scoring system.

Thomas led all rushers with 122 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns and Paden rushed for 110 yards and a score on 14 carries.

Freshman quarterback Ben Hicks threw for 240 yards, highlighted by a 70-yard touchdown pass to senior Jeremiah Gaines.

Gaines led all receivers with 109 yards on four catches on the afternoon. Freshman Alex Honey hauled in three catches for 55 yards and a touchdown. Honey made a terrific catch in the back corner of the endzone, barely getting a foot down before he fell out of bounds.

Defensive backs Jesse Montgomery and Brent Freeman led the defense, each recording seven tackles, while Montgomery registered an interception and Freeman recorded a sack. Sophomore Mitchell Kaufman had five tackles and a sack. The defense logged six sacks and two interceptions.

The 2016 schedule features six home contests, including American Athletic Conference foes Houston, Memphis, USF and Navy. In-state rival TCU visits the Hilltop during the Family Weekend on Friday, September 23. For ticket information, call the Athletics Ticket Office at 214-SMU-GAME (768-4263) or click here.

Sarcasm? 13-31 for Hicks: 5-20 for Colbert. Hicks 70 yard pass to Sutton was a solid pass.

Hicks appears to have some serious accuracy problems.

Can you imagine how bad Hicks' accuracy would get if he faced real competition?

The guy throws a few good balls, but jezzz way too many of his throws are WAY off the mark!

Paden is a 5-9, 190-pound senior transfer from Cisco JC.

So Hicks has serious accuracy problems, Colbert is 5-20 (how is that even possible?), and Davis can't hit the broad side of a barn. Better take 2 QB's in this class! All of those great receivers are going to get restless the next 2 years waiting for a real QB to develop.

Ben Hicks has had: winter conditioning 2015 + full spring practice, summer workouts and 7 on 7.
Fall training camp and a full 2015 season of practice.
2016 winter offseason program and now a full spring ball.
Every scrimmage has been like what we saw yesterday...very inconsistent at best.
This is also going against the worst defense in the country, that was missing a handful of starters; with the added comfort of knowing he was not going to get hit.

I don't know boys...sometimes-it is....what it is.
