"Per this article, the final design phase has started and construction will start in the Fall pending BOR approval of the final designs and the funding plan. It's always possible funding could fall through which would cause the BOR not to approve it, but it looks very likely that construction will start in a few months."

There's a difference between approving the final funding plan and getting the funding. You don't approve the funding plan until you get the final design and costs. You don't go into the final design phase unless you're prepping to build. Is SMU in the final design phase or

We'll see in a few months since construction is supposed to start in the Fall.

If you question UH's funding ability, see the basketball renovation plan. The $60 million upgrade to the basketball arena will now be funded by $20 million in arena naming rights with most of the rest coming from other levels of sponsorship with a small amount coming from student fees (approved by the students to specifically build TDECU and renovate the arena).

Athletic facility funding hasn't been a problem lately with the basketball practice facility, basketball arena, football stadium, etc. $6 million of the $20 million had already been raised in February for the IPF. I doubt the rest would be an issue.

Yeah it hasn't been a problem because UH is a large public university that can tap large streams of revenue from its student body fees and corporate entities interested in doing business with a large state university -don't pretend you can compete in SMU's league as far as alumni donations. UH is one of the most subsidized athletic programs in the country. UH's funding situation basically has zero in common with SMU's. Our buildings are named after alumni-not corporations.

Exactly. UH just pushed the Hofheinz name to the side. http://www.houstonpress.com/news/uh-and ... le-8482527

So you have a problem that much of the funding has been corporate sponsorship vs private donations? UH may not have as many large private donors as SMU, but it's not like we don't have any.

The $25 million Guy V Lewis basketball practice facility was funded primarily through private donors who bought the naming rights and wanted it named after Coach.
The $2.4 million softball field was donated by a UH alum.
The $4 million baseball renovations were from large private donors.
The $1.5 million track renovations were from large private donors.
The IPF already has $5.7 million+ donated from large private donors.

We don't even know if the $20 million naming rights for the stadium is corporate. I'd assume so, but the basketball practice facility was a hefty naming rights donation that was private.

That's over $35 million over the last few years from private donors just for athletic facilities not basketball arena or football stadium.

Obviously you didn't read my article that says all of the things they're doing for Hofheinz:
Rename the street
Bronze statue by the arena
Area in the Alumni Center to recognize his contributions
Library will archive a special collection of his records

Many consider the challenge you posted about as a money grab for Hofheinz's heirs (they requested several million dollars in compensation). Glad they worked out a deal where everyone is happy and Judge Hofheinz is still recognized.

UH is a university 5 times bigger than SMU with half the endowment

So why haven't you built an IPF yet? Seems like an unrelated comment.

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Because on SMU's campus it never rains or snows, and it is always a pleasant 76 degrees Fahrenheit......and the women walking by are great looking! 8)

Yes, I've read several articles on the issue. None of these "honors" is close to having a name on the facility, but at least the first two are a step in the right direction.

When UH announced the change, none of these "honors" were mentioned so it sounds like UH did it to appease the family rather than paying respect to the man who made the facility possible.

UAB announced last week the building an IPF and they don't even have a football team until next year. How embarrassing that they will have one before us. How can Turner say he is for football when he puts the IPF last on the sports agenda; behind a ridiculous over the top tennis facility.
