Forest Gregg - Lombardi called him his greatest player...Raymond Berry (Unitas's favorite receiver)...different era but both were considered the top player in their position at their time.

It always blows my mind not just to think of the many HOFers that were Mustangs, but all of the Iconic players and figures that were Mustangs...

1) Doak Walker

2) Kyle Rote -which opposing team honored him because he was so well liked and respected?

3) Don Meredith- great Cowboy Qb, took a merciless beating from fans and press, not to mention defenses, before retiring and becoming an Iconic broadcaster and IMO a HOFer.
He was rock star in the 70's.

5) Raymond Berry- Unitas favorite receiver, the ultimate precision route runner possession receiver of his time.

6) Eric Dickerson

If any school can put up a more iconic 7 than that, then great, but I am not sure there is one.

2 on that list were also Super Bowl HCs + another made enormous contributions to the sport of Soccer.

I agree there are not 5 schools with a more iconic Top 7 list.

I didn't realize his contract was that long. I thought I read here that it was a 2 year deal.

Sanders is not even close to being the most successful SMU player at the NFL level. Most have been mentioned, but ranking them would be tough. I'd say Dickerson is # 1 based on career but after that it's tough. Would give the nod to Forrest based on Packer run and titles, all-pro, coaching stint, etc... At # 3 I'd put Raymond Berry ahead of Don Meredith at # 4 and after that, you could argue all day long about who had a more distinguished NFL career. Sanders has a long ways to go but it would be nice to have him enjoy the kind of career Berry did.

Emanuel Tolbert had an outstanding career (11 seasons) playing pro football in Canada, although things didn't work out too well for him after football. Uh, I think he might still be in prison. All-America WR at SMU.

I saw Ray Schoenke mentioned above. Without him, Sonny Jurgensen would not be in the Hall of Fame. He was a great guard for a long time.

Thanks for posting that. Forgot all about Mays. I remember a Sports Illustrated article that featured Jerry and was all about the "week after a game leading up to the next game". Really highlighted the beating those guys take in the trenches.

yep although he only played 1 year in NFL I think. He made the All-AFL All Time team, 6 time AFL All Star and NFL Pro Bowl and won a Super Bowl
