New-look running game?

Postby PonyPride » Fri May 13, 2016 3:05 pm

Running back Xavier Jones had a standout season as a true freshman, finishing as SMU's second-leading ground gainer, rushing 152 times for 634 yards (4.2 yards per carry) and 10 touchdowns, the most rushing touchdowns by any freshman in SMU history.

Stallion made an interesting comment in another thread.

Could Jones be a different player in 2016? Sure — players change as they mature, physically and mentally, and many players and coaches will say that the biggest growth happens between a player's freshman and sophomore season.

In Jones' case, a significant part of that growth is physical. He was listed on last year's roster at 193 pounds — which, depending on who you ask, might have been a little generous. Jones has been working hard in the strength and conditioning program, and reportedly has put on 20 pounds since last season (to about 200) ... and shaved a 10th of a second off his 40 time (from 4.58 to 4.48).

How that translates to the field remains to be seen. But if nothing else, the changes are indicative of considerable work by Jones.
