Postby PonyPride » Thu Jul 21, 2016 7:45 pm

The former Republican House Member from Dallas and candidate for TX Attorney General — and a graduate of SMU's law school — is throwing his support behind SMU getting into Big 12:

Dan Branch
@TexansForDan

@Big12Conference expansion needs to include @SMUMustangs and @UHouston. Don't let other conf's raid TX!

Yeah, that will really put us over the top - yah, Dan Branch.

Let's wait until the Park Cities People editorial page endorses us - that's what we need.

SMU people generally aren't from Texas. They don't care about SMU sports. When it's Labor Day weekend and we're playing Baylor or Tech, they're going to go on a luxurious vacation like Donald Trump and his SMU communications director - they're not going to an SMU game. Our people don't care.

Just for your info, TCU's class of 2017 has less than 50% of their students from Texas. That's identical to SMU. Argument shut down....again.

Stop drinking that Austin Koolaid! You must be young or have dementia if you don't think that politicians don't play a role in such decisions. Baylor is in the Big XII because of politicians.

I don't know where you are getting your stats. In 2015, SMU reported 2,760 undergraduates from Texas out of 6,411 total undergraduate students or 43.05%. If you look at the first year class, SMU reports 508 Texans out of a total first year class of 1,374, or 36.97%. Actually, the percentage of out-of-state students in the first year class has been increasing every year.

It would not surprise me if SMU had a higher percentage of out-of-state students than any other university in Texas.

Probably Texas Tech as well.

A lot of those out of state students stay in TX. What's your point?

Approximately 50 percent of SMU undergraduates come from outside of Texas, with California, Florida and Missouri following Texas as the leading home states.

You are citing 2014 numbers. In 2014, SMU reported 2,887 students from Texas out of a total undergraduate enrollment of 6,391, or 45.17%. Your cited statement says "approximately 50 percent" and 45.17% can certainly be rounded to 50%. The other possibility is they are including some non-resident aliens in the number of Texans, although, they are not supposed to include them as residents.

Meanwhile, for 2015, TCU reports 4,658 students from Texas out of a total undergraduate enrollment of 8,894, or 52.37%. http://www.ir.tcu.edu/zfiles/Fall2015.pdf.
