It's time for Morris and co. to step up in the AAC

Postby Comet » Wed Dec 07, 2016 10:01 am

Taggart is off to Oregon
Herman is off to Texas
Rhule is off to Baylor

Navy, Tulsa, and Memphis are still in our division with their head coach so nothing has gotten easier with them but we were within striking distance of putting Navy and Tulsa down. I sincerely hope we can at least be a top 2 team in the West next year.

Yeah, not sure Navy is considered in striking distance right now. Maybe when we get them below 70.

We hung with them this year and it didn't get out of hand until early in the third.

That's been the SMU mantra post DP. Lots of games are close until they get out of hand.

"Early third" means half the game. We didn't hang with them.

Yeah, we really need to routinely beat Tulsa starting next year.

As for Memphis, I'm kind of at a loss as to why we've gotten blown out the last 2 years. I'm going to say it's a speed thing. I'm from Memphis and we were beating Memphis routinely with JJ so I'm just not used to losing to them (they've always been terrible in mind). I'm hopeful that can start changing soon.

As for Navy, I have no comment. I agree with everyone on here that it's a defense thing we need to just flat out figure out. I'm not saying we won't be able to shut it down but just hold them to enough points where we "out score" them.

I say next year we beat Tulsa, hang with Memphis but lose in a tight game, and lose to Navy but not as bad, setting up wins against all 3 (or at least Tulsa and Memphis in 18). :-)

Well Memphis game was a blown coverage and then an offensive turn over and suddenly we are down 14-0 after a few minutes. We get a touch down and another defensive breakdown, 21-7 in the first. It was a mental thing really.
