2017 QB??

16 years into my SMU fandom and I have never been so excited, yet unsure of who the starting qb will be in the upcoming season. So far as I can tell (which is little), it almost feels like a 1/3,1/3,1/3 toss up b/w Peavy, Hicks and DJ (not to mention the wildcard factor of MD getting a medical RS). My pure gut tells me Gillins wins out, but that is nothing more than a guess. Anyone else have insight or interesting speculation?

It is the off-season; I figured this was a better thread than talking about IPFs, attendance and jerseys...could be worse, could be overhead projectors.

This spring and fall should be fun to see how it plays out. I'm interested to see how our OL is next year. I felt like a lot of times it would have been great to have a QB who could scramble out of the pocket and make plays which is an element Hicks couldn't add. DJ has that ability but I have no idea how good his arm actually is. I feel like in the first game or two, you could see a QB rotation between DJ and Peavy and see who runs the offense better in game.

Five biggest offseason needs for SMU, including recruiting, finding answer at QB

Quarterback situation -- SMU lost starting quarterback Matt Davis early in the year to injury, but there is a chance he will be back next season if awarded a medical redshirt. Ben Hicks filled in for Davis but struggled as a redshirt freshman, throwing 15 interceptions. Hicks didn't exactly prove that he's the quarterback of the future. Darrell Colbert played some last year as well and could prove to be a factor. The Mustangs are also bringing in Arkansas transfer Rafe Peavey and junior college product DJ Gillins. The Mustangs need to decide in what direction they want to go.

Rafe and, of course, Hicks have the upper hand just because they are here. I think you start with Hicks and then one of the other two have to TAKE the starting job from him. It will be interesting because none of the 3 want to be holding clip boards and, especially DJ, don't have much time left in terms of eligibility. Hicks still has 3 years left regardless. This is the position you want to be in, although you want to find your obvious starter asap and get him reps as early and often as possible.

For the first time in the Post DP era, we aren't looking for the "least bad" QB option. When it is all over, our 2nd (and probably 3rd) string QB would be viable starters. When was the last time that was true?

Barring any injuries, I'd put my money on Peavy taking the job.

I would guess Peavy as well - which will cause some drama but that's college football (or any football actually)

Peavey was heads and shoulders better than anyone we had in practice. Can't wait to see what he does this spring.

Ramon Flanigan was the greatest SMU quarterback to ever live. Hard to ever get excited about an SMU QB again.

Ramon Flanagan of SMU and David Israel of Tech had to be the all-time leaders in years eligible to play...

Flannigan damn near made it to three presidential tenures. Reagan, Daddy Bush, and Slick Willy.

I like how his name is spelled three different ways in this thread.
