Advocate: Thomas Morstead now adds value with ... his hands

The Saints were once worried about Thomas Morstead's hands, but he's worked them into a strength

BY NICK UNDERHILL

The Saints had one red mark on Thomas Morstead’s scouting report.

They had seen him drop punts all over the field with his booming leg throughout his college career and were confident he could do the same in the NFL.

But they'd also also seen him drop a few snaps. There was some concern that his hands could undermine his foot.

“There was a question about his hands just in regards to catching the long snap to punt the ball, which isn’t a good thing,” coach Sean Payton said. “Certainly, doesn’t lend itself to think that, 'Oh, we’re going to make him a holder.' ”

TM has been a great ambassador for the Saints and for SMU, as well. He's active in the NOLA community and, as the article shows, is constantly working to improve. He's one of those guys we can proudly call our own.

The Saints have also picked up two more Mustangs this season: Chris Banjo and Sterling Moore, who have contributed greatly. I look for all of them to be back next year. Moore is part of an improved secondary that had been wracked by injury and the Saints' special teams play has improved notably after Banjo's arrival.
