Although most young folks will not remember him. He was an ABC Monday Night Football Broadcaster, the first really good Dallas Cowboy QB & was the SMU QB back in the day!!! I was very young when he played for the BOYS, but he had to be great to be in (THE RING OF HONOR).Of course I don't remember his SMU years. My Dad played against him in the late 50s in High School. The reason I brought this up is because I was in Mt Vernon, Tx a couple weeks ago and went by the Cemetery to check on some Family graves which were located very close to the Meredith Family. I noticed they have moved his grave to the edge of the Cemetery and really fixed it up where people can go by there. Its really nice. Like I said most young folks probably don't remember him, but I thought it was a neat thing to share! I wont ramble on, Only got one last thing to say about it. TURN OUT THE LIGHTS, THE PARTY IS OVER!!

For years, the biggest HS basketball event in North Texas was the Dr. Pepper Classic.

I think Don held both tournament and single game scoring records, most likely held these records for over 2 decades.

He was the best. Thanks for sharing. It sounds like a weekend trip to Mt. Vernon might be in order to see it!

Remember that great MNF game, I think in Houston, when they panned the crowd and one of the true Oiler fans flipped the bird...Don't response was awesome.

Something along the lines of "well somebody thinks the Houston Oilers are number one ". Classic.

Must've been six or seven years ago but there was a game at Ford where Don got introduced to the crowd from a window in the club. He looked a bit feeble but waved anyway and you could just see how pleased he was how everybody stood up and cheered for him. Wasn't too long after that he passed away. Don was a great one.

I knew Don at SMU. Mrydel is right. I have some wonderful memories of him being there. Most exciting football player I have EVER seen! Bar none! And a great humble person.

If one could go back and check the archives of the DMN regarding a Cowboy's home game in 1966?? against the highly acclaimed Cleveland Browns with legendary Jimmy Brown, you would find virtually every article covering that game proclaiming it to be the most perfect game ever played by an NFL QB. Yes, he was Dandy Don.
