Wasn't it originally a long-term agreement (like 12 years)?

It should be pretty obvious to any SMU fan why we are stuck playing NTSU-its one of the few games on our schedule that we can get a decent crowd, low travel expenses and its conveniently located. If you want to schedule the 3 Blind Mice to make the Egg Nog Bowl then this is how you do it and still get decent attendance

UNT and TCU every year make sense to me for reasons Stallion points out and scheduling UNT gives us a chance to win at least one of our DFW area games. Hopefully the program improves to a level where we can start beating TCU again and scheduling more of our former SWC mates but that appears to be at least a few years away

The UNT game might be our biggest home crowd of 2017.

It's a smart game for the area.

Gross - we can do better. We have to start scheduling lower end of P-5 in PAC or ACC. Have to.

the costs of getting an east coast or west coast P5 doesn't make financial sense for either side. They would draw LESS than NTSU and there would be only a handful of schools would even consider a home and home. You're replacing a P5 Home Game with a game in Dallas when they could play Appy St, Savanah St. or Furman or somebody else for huge payday home game. SMU would draw less on the east coast too with much higher travel costs. At least when you play a Big 12 P5 you fill your stadium. If you put the pencil to paper the numbers don't add up-which why they aren't scheduled

We haven't tried it in a long time, so might be worth a try. SMU folks travel when the opponent a known name and the city if fun. So for example Georgia tech would draw as many SMU fans to Atlanta as we would bring to UTSA in San Antonio.

We have a huge alumni base in California now. Lets try a home and away with anyone in that area and see what happens.

UNT is junk. We need to try something new.

Economics of P5 Home games has changed the landscape. See link for a lot of great examples and why P5 schools would rather play a guaranteed home game and pay a large paycheck to a body-bag than play a home/home even with a quality opponent. Examples discussing ONLY Ticket revenue which is only part of the revenue such as parking, concessions, merchandise, Conference TV revenue that goes to home team, community investment leading to local sponsorship-think what one of these games means to College Station, Norman or Fayetteville etc

Consider 2010, when Ohio State's home schedule included a game against No. 12 Miami and, two weeks later, a game against Eastern Michigan, which would finish near the bottom of the MAC.

EMU
Appearance Fee: $850,000
Ticket Revenue: $5,536,634
Attendance: 105,017

Miami
Appearance Fee: $500,000
Ticket Revenue: $6,496,306
Attendance 105,454

http://www.sbnation.com/college-footbal ... games-cost

a P5 from the ACC or PAC12 playing a home/home with SMU is a multi-million dollar revenue loss especially when those same schools could play a sponsor spotlight game at Jerry World and charge twice as much for tickets

While it makes sense, it's not a matchup that's exciting but at least it's an easy commute to the away games.

The sad thing is we are still at a point where we have to do a one-for-one deal with NTSU.

I hope someday we are back to the point where we never consider playing them in Denton but I assume that ship has sailed...

we did that not too long ago with UNC from the ACC and WSU from the PAC. Neither drew more than UNT as I recall and those schools did not warrant higher ticket prices so it was not an attractive economic move. Future home/home series with any former SWC foe or lower level Big XII school willing to schedule us that way is the way to go. Kansas opening Ford Stadium was a nice get for SMU. As Stallion has noted, the economics have changed rather dramatically and P5 schools that can fill their stadiums no matter who comes visiting have very little incentive to risk a loss at an improving SMU in Ford Stadium. My guess is that there are very few Division I FBS schools willing to schedule SMU in Dallas without a return visit to their place and that includes schools from CUSA and the SunBelt. Brace yourself for more regional home/home series with schools like Arky State, La Tech, UTEP, etc...and let's just hope SMU develops a fan following that will come out to watch those games.
