John Simmons ended his career with 2nd most Interceptions in SWC History with 17-plus made huge plays on special teams

He had a legendary Senior year especially

Simmons would end his senior season with seven interceptions, two of which went for six. He averaged 21.7 yards per kickoff return and 12.2 yard per punt return with two touchdowns. He was named All-SWC and First Team All-American in 1980, sharing the honor with some pretty legendary defensive stalwarts including Ronnie Lott, Lawrence Taylor, Mike Singletary, and Kenny Easley.

Same size as me out of high school. Broyles told me I was too small also. In my case I guess he was right since I got broken.

That dude was a playmaker. Incredibly talented and very business like. Don't remember him being overly flamboyant. If I recall, the Bengals drafted him but his pro career was not nearly as electric for some reason. SMU great for sure!

Absolutely agree, Stallion. He also had an impact in the locker room.

A gifted individual, and a cornerstone in the turn around under Meyer.

As I recall, John was injured in the second half of the 1980 Holiday Bowl game, which helped BYU make their big comeback.
