Former SMU player earns NFL coaching fellowship

Postby PonyPride » Thu Jul 20, 2017 12:50 am

After his playing career was cut short by concussions, former SMU cornerback Derrius Bell began pursuing a career in coaching. Starting as an SMU graduate assistant, Bell began the journey that led him to his current position as UTEP's cornerbacks coach. This summer, Bell got to visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff and was one of just three assistant coaches in the country to earn a Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bell visited with PonyFans.com to discuss the transition from player to coach and what he got out of his time working with NFL coaches, and to look ahead into his coaching his future.

In just the last few weeks I've also seen news stories about City Councilman Tennell Atkins, Richie Butler and Jason Evans-raising the profile in the community. Here's one on Butler about building community unity

Great opportunity for Derrius and it's nice to see a Mustang doing well in the college coaching ranks.

Would love to have seen him play a full 4 years. Really good player.
Great to see him enjoying some success as a coach.
