Sutton Named AAC Player Of The Week, Lawler Earns Honor Roll Accolades

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – Junior wide receiver Courtland Sutton has been named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week by the American Athletic Conference, the league announced Monday, while senior Justin Lawler earned a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.

Sutton had a career-high four touchdown receptions, setting a new AAC record and tying the school record (Emanuel Tolbert at Baylor Oct. 14, 1978). The total is also the most by an FBS player in a game this season and gives Sutton his fifth straight game with at least one touchdown catch. Sutton finished with eight catches for 163 yards to help the Mustangs defeat North Texas, 54-32, Saturday. The junior is now fourth on SMU's all-time career receiving touchdowns list with 24, and seventh on the Mustangs' list with 2,320 career receiving yards. Among active FBS players, Sutton ranks second in career touchdown receptions and sixth for career receiving yards.

Lawler finished the day with seven tackles, 2.0 sacks and 3.0 tackles for loss Saturday. The defensive end has now amassed 12.0 sacks and 27.0 tackles for loss in his four seasons on the Hilltop. He also posted the second forced fumble of his career.

The Mustangs are back in action Saturday at TCU at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
