Hicks Selected For Midseason Manning Award Watch List
NEW ORLEANS (SMU) – Sophomore quarterback Ben Hicks was one of 11 student-athletes named to the midseason Manning Award Watch List on Thursday.
In six games this season, Hicks has thrown for 1,672 yards and 15 touchdowns. He registered a career-high 41 completions in the Mustangs' game at Houston on Oct. 7, compiling 397 yards and one touchdown. It was his third 300+ yard passing game this season and sixth of his career. The sophomore posted career-high touchdown totals in SMU's wins over North Texas and UConn with four apiece.
Hicks has 4,602 career passing yards, placing him eighth on SMU's all-time list, and is also on the program's all-time list for passing touchdowns (34, T-7th) and completions (364, 9th).
Hicks was named to Athlon Sports' preseason All-American Athletic Conference fourth team and was the No. 22 player on its College Football Top 25 Breakout Quarterbacks list to start the season.
Thirty student-athletes were named to the preseason edition of the watch list in August. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. The winner will be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, and will be announced after the bowls in January and honored at a ceremony in New Orleans.
The Mustangs are back in action Saturday, Oct. 21 at Cincinnati. Kick is slated for 3 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
