They need to cut payroll on Van. He hasn’t been earning it for awhile.

It's also that they stay in man the entire time. Teams have figured out that they can overload one side with WR and runs shifts to empty out the middle of the field of our defenders because we stay in man. Then they run up the middle.

Memphis does a great job blocking. They pin a tackle, then pull a guard to block the only LB in the area. It is a simple numbers game.

Yes, we miss a ton of tackles. And there are athletic deficiencies. Not saying that. But when we leave 7 in the box, we actually defend the run quite well and zone the pass and do decent. It is when we push the star outside and leave 6 in the box we get in a ton of trouble. Everyone has figured it out.

It shows up also on the QB runs. Nobody is in the middle of the field, and it is an easy trot for a first or TD. We have been burned a ton on that when we have them in third and long this game (and all season). The only exception was there was one game we actually played with a spy and shut that play down.

Schematically we are poor but it is more than that.

Other than D. Scott and Lawler we've got a bunch of marginal D1 talent on the defensive line.

We have one of the worst linebacker groups in all of college football.

Wyatt is a plus corner. Christian Davis is OK. Clemons and Onu are about as wildly inconsistent as any two players in SMU history. There are times where you see the talent but way too many WTF moments.

I would say it is encouraging that we are relatively young on defense but I'm not sure how many real players we have on that side of the ball. Without Lawler who provides consistent pass rush presence next year. We also lose Gentry and JT Williams in the middle. Losing Rhone and Cox is nothing to sweat.

24, 6, 8, 4, 15, 13, 35, 91, 10 have all made plays this year and all will be back next year. They have play with 17 in the middle today for the first time, and 33 has had playing time as well.

I don't disagree that we have talent and youth issues. Everyone agrees with that. You see it with poor angles and missed tackles. But the spacing of the scheme leaves a lot to be desired.

Think about it this way.

Our WR and RB are way better athletes than a lot of players on the teams we play.

Even CM before the season started said DL was a real strength.

How many jail break plays do our great athletes get compared to the other team?

There is something wrong not only with players but the scheme itself. Some changes need to be made.

So who could we recruit for a DC? I can't think of anyone who make the switch to us.

It might be a strength on a very poor defense but those guys wearing blue on the Offensive Line with 144 starts flat embarrassed each and every SMU Defensive Lineman

With the loss of Lawler & Gentry, and the return of Malone, Morris' defense could actually be worse next year
