Mustangs Stay Inside During the Afternoon

The SMU football team continued preparations for the 2001
season on Wednesday morning with a two-hour workout in full pads at the SMU
Practice Fields. Mustang head coach Mike Cavan broke the trend of two-a-days
though, as he kept his players off the practice field in the afternoon. Instead, the team lifted weights and studied film inside the Paul B. Loyd All-Sports Center.

SMU's defense dominated most of the 11-on-11 drills during practice but the
offense did break through with a long touchdown pass from David Page to Cody
Cardwell.

"The guys have given maximum effort throughout the first week of practice,
so I decided to give them some time inside this afternoon," said Cavan. "It
is a good way to beat the afternoon heat and we will get some things
accomplished in meetings this afternoon."

The lone injury of the day occurred during inside drills when defensive
tackle John David Blagg broke the fibula in his left leg. Head trainer Cash
Birdwell expects Blagg to miss the next eight to 10 weeks.

"It is a shame for John David," said Cavan. "He was making strides. We'll
just need someone to step up and take his place."

SMU continues two-a-days on Thursday with workouts at 9:30 a.m. and 3:40
p.m. The Mustangs will hold their first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday
night at 7:00 p.m. in Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Prior to the scrimmage, from
3:00 p.m. through 7:00 p.m., the SMU athletic department will hold an open
house at the stadium. Season and single game tickets will be on sale during
the open house.

This is a real crime. From all accounts, J.D. was working hard in the spring and the offseason to be ready to fulfill his potential on the defensive line. This guy has had a great deal of bad luck with injuries, and he deserves a healthy, injury-free year. Keep the faith, J.D., and come back strong and ready!
