Five Mustangs Earn All-American Athletic Conference Honors

Five Mustangs Earn All-American Athletic Conference Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – Five Mustangs have been honored as All-American Athletic Conference selections, league officials announced on Wednesday. Justin Lawler, Trey Quinn and Courtland Sutton were first-team selections, while Evan Brown and Jordan Wyatt picked up honorable mention accolades from the league to round out the group.

The five selections is the most for the Mustangs in The American since its inception in 2013, and the most for SMU since 2012. Both Sutton and Lawler are two-time first-team selections, earning first-team accolades in 2016 as well.

Trey Quinn | WR | JR | Lake Charles, La.
Quinn leads the nation in receptions per game (8.8...), while also ranking inside the top five in receiving touchdowns (12), and the top 10 in both receiving yards (1,191) and receiving yards per game (99.3). In 12 games this season, Quinn has a team-leading 106 receptions, placing him second on SMU's single-season receptions list. His 1,191 receiving yards are fourth in a season for a Mustang.

The junior has posted two of the three top-reception performances in the FBS, with 17 catches at Houston and at Cincinnati. With the 15 receptions against UConn the game prior, he became the only player this century to register 15+ catches in three straight games. He has six 100+ yard performances in 2017, including four straight starting Sept. 30 against UConn.

Quinn is a semifinalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, and was one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award.

Courtland Sutton | WR | JR | Brenham, Texas
Sutton finished the regular season among active FBS leaders in career receiving touchdowns (3rd, 31), receiving yards (6th, 3,152), yards per catch (7th, 16.7) and receiving yards per game (7th, 82.9). In 12 games, he registered 62 catches for 1,017 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Sutton is second all-time at SMU for career receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and career 100+ yard games (14) lists, while his 2017 total placed him second on the single-season touchdown list (12).

A preseason Heisman Trophy candidate and All-America selection, Sutton was named to the Biletnikoff and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Preseason Watch Lists this season.

Justin Lawler | DE | SR | Pottsboro, Texas
Lawler leads the nation with three blocked kicks, and is 10th in sacks per game (0.79).

The senior finished the regular season with a team-best 9.5 sacks, placing him fifth in a single season at SMU and bringing his career total to 20.5, 13th among active FBS players. Lawler also has a team-high 15.5 tackles for loss, and leads the team with 10 quarterback hurries. He is second on the team with 74 tackles.

Lawler is a member of the final Ted Hendricks Award watch list and was also named to the Chuck Bednarik, Bronko Nagurski and Wuerffel Trophy preseason lists and was a nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team and Senior CLASS Award.

Evan Brown | C | SR | Southlake, Texas
Rimington Trophy and Outland Trophy Watch List selection Brown started all 12 games for the Mustangs this season. He helped lead SMU to a top-10 ranking with a 40.2 scoring offense, with top-20 numbers in first down offense (11th, 292), total offense (12th, 493.8...) and passing offense (16th, 308...).

Jordan Wyatt | CB | JR | Wylie, Texas
Wyatt finished the regular season as the all-time leader at SMU with 288 career interception return yards as well as the defense return touchdown leader (5). His return TDs place him second among active FBS players and his return yards are fourth. His career forced fumble total now stands at eight, tied for eighth among active FBS players.

The junior leads the team with four interceptions for 165 yards and three forced fumbles, and has 49 tackles, 4.5 tackles per loss and 1.0 sack this season. He also registered three touchdowns.

SMU finished the 2017 regular season 7-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The 6-1 home record is the best since 1981. The Mustangs have currently amassed 482 points and 63 total touchdowns this season, both SMU records.
