Tell me how much you're willing to pay

The days when a G5 can outbid a Top 10 P5 for its Hot-Shot Coordinator may just be closing-or if not this cycle-then probably the next. I'm not sure SMU could make it worth the while to hire either Venables (1.7 Million) or Orlando (1.0 Million) unless SMU substantially raises its payscale. I seriously doubt the current salary of 2.1 Million would close either deal-because I'd expect Clemson, UT, Arkansas and others to drive the salaries up. If not there are other Good Coordinators but not the Herman, Morris, Frost sure-thing types when they were hired.

That is why going forward it is probably best to go after those retreads that were successful at G5 programs and simply did not win enough to appease the fanbase at P5 programs. I think Sumlin, Graham, maybe Miles, possibly even Dykes could be very successful at SMU and would prefer being head coach at a program like SMU over going back to being a coordinator at a P5 school. Sumlin may very well have P5 options but I don't think the others will until they prove themselves again at the G5 level.

I have amazingly agreed with almost everything Rebel10 has posted today, so with apologies to him, I still think Houston Nutt would be a good hire if you are looking long term rather than stepping stone.

Houston Nutt is even more enthusiastic than CM. He is also a good recruiter with a winning record. And, as Mrydel said, he would STAY!

From what you say, Houston would bust a Nutt recruiting.

Better yet Todd Graham is only 53 and has a .612 winning percentage despite working for 2 private schools and rebuilding about 5 times. 10 bowls in 12 years. If you want the guy that is the surest most proven winning Coach I'd say Graham has to be up near the top. He would also hire the best young staff and develop them. In First year at each stop he was

Rice +5 in first year
Tulsa +2 1/2 in first year
Arizona St +2 in first year
he did take 2 steps back in his only season at Pitt

Made a bowl in first year at all 4 stops

But the subject was who would stay, and I doubt Graham would. Would he be good? You bet.

don't have any idea how long Graham would stay, but then again how long did cm stay? A good coach will always have one foot out the door looking for a better job. If he is successful that is our loss/gain. winning here will enable us to bring in better coaches and talent..

Onward and upward.

You'd have to analyze it but at 53 the answer might be different now. I can confidently say if he raises our W/L record significantly and we don't give him or his staff a raise over a 3 year period he'll be looking to move.

I’m confused. Should I stay out here on this ledge ready to jump, or go back in for the night. Please reply quickly because it is cold and lonely out here.
