Sonny's Staff

Since we are assuming this is happening, who is available for offense, defense, special teams, lines, LBs, etc?

I sure hope Ramon is in the mix. I would love for him to step up once Dykes bolts.

Well we know Traylor has a position at Arky so he'll be gone.

And it sounds like Van Malone and the defensive staff will remain available to Sonny. I sincerely hope we go a completely different direction.

I agree, Ramon's heart is with SMU. Keeping Traylor as OC might improve continuity.

Sonny will make them available to the rest of the college football world.

Honestly, keeping Traylor at a low salary and saving the money makes more sense than Sonny. Here's his resume:

LA tech (WAC (updated))
2010 - 5-7 Conference (4-4)
2011 - 8-5 Conference (6-1)
2012 - 9-3 Conference (4-2)

California (PAC12)

2013 - 1-11 (0-9)
2014 - 5-7 (3-6)
2015 - 8-5 (4-5)
2016 - 5-7 (3-6)

Never a winning conference record in the PAC. Are you freaking kidding me? This hire might have made sense had we not gotten Chad but obviously he was at Cal and probably wouldn't have left. We need a coach that can show a real 9+ win resume or an outstanding recruiter. Not a loser.

Aside from 2016 I see he improved his record every season.

Done deal on me selling bowl tickets and not renewing season tickets. Admin and Hart have given up with this hire. I'm done. At least we have basketball for the moment.

I would have to think Van Malone DOES NOT HAVE ANY CHANCE of being retained. Although, this is SMU. No amount of incompetency surprises me when it comes to SMU football.

A very reputable source tells me he is bringing Cher as a vocal coach.

At this point, we are hiring a Van Malone of HCs.

So we pick a more senior experienced coach (younger than Chad by the way) over a guy with three years experience, and that's a reason to throw your hands up? Don't really get that.

I also wish we had better options, but we are G-5 and have to pick either the unproven up and comer (I understand we interviewed a couple) or a previous head coach with some mud on the tires.

Looks like we chose that later, and probably the best available among that group with Texas ties and a decent track record.

Not really a reason to bolt unless you are clueless to begin with.

A little emotional, aren't we? Or maybe just a reflection of why SMU has so few remaining "fans". You obviously care about the program or you wouldn't spend so much time on this board, but when you grow up hopefully you will support the school and our athletic programs regardless of who our coaches might be. Yes, it gets demoralizing and has been for the better part of the post death penalty era, but ultimately every SMU "fan" needs to decide whether (and how much) they are going to support this program.

CP, I understand your criticism. I just can't take the fact that we made an idiotic hire. I could understand Jeff Traylor to at least stabilize the program for a year and see how he does in the bowl game but Sonny Dykes. I mean thats Rick Hart and company just putting in the white flag. The only way you can show your displeasure is to threaten giving up bowl tickets and season tickets. Assuming someone didn't over-rule Hart, I'm good with getting rid of him. If it's a money thing, again Jeff Traylor should have been something we could afford. A low level analyst from TCU is who we put for HC. I mean that's called giving up.
