I’ve never participated in a buyout negotiation so I’m not going to pretend like I know the rules. In theory, if Cal is on the hook for $2.5m a year to Sonny and we only pay let’s say $0.5m then they still have to pay $2.0m right? If it’s something like that then that makes perfect sense why it’s being keep hush hush about it.

alum11- like you I'm not a contracts guy but I think you are basically correct with the exception that the coach must attempt to get a new deal with a reasonable number (negotiate in good faith). IIRC charlie strongs new contract was designed to pay him a lot less while the whorens money is still being paid and then more in the later years.

Maybe he was a coach in waiting without being on the payroll. He could get paid by Cal, put his name in for openings as Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida State, etc., where he would not be a target (to show he's trying), and then when Chad left, he was instantly our guy.

are we seriously debating Chad vs Meyer??? Meyer is the best coach SMU has ever had. He made us a top tier program and might I remind you recruited Eric Dickerson? Chad never even landed a 4 star.
also was 0-5 vs P5 and was average at best coach in the American conference, with 1 solid win in 3 years coming against Houston

SMU was top tier program before Meyer arrived. Have you ever heard of Walker, Rote, Benners or go look up the old out of conference schedules with schools like Mizzou, Ohio State we won more than we lost. The sw conference was tough in those days SMU was a middle of the road team but could hold its own against any team

Watched Dykes press conference. What a disaster hire. Recruits are in no way going to connect with this guy. Coach Cavan would connect better with recruits then this guy. Not only is he boring, but he has zero to sell them as far as his own personal accomplishments. I'm surprised that given that SMU decided to go this route, they didn't just hire someone like Les Miles. At least Les could show the recruits his National Championship Ring. The End of SMU's program has finally come. Does anyone know what he's getting paid? Hopefully, it's under $75K. This guy would have taken the job for free. I love his baseball analogy to the players. HE SOLD THEM FOR SURE!!
