Next years OL

Postby JasonB » Tue Jan 02, 2018 8:07 pm

I was going to post on this today, and when I was looking at the roster noticed a Rivals article up...

but I think our OL next year is going to be as good as the OL was during the first two winning seasons under June.

Howerton is going to be just as good or better than Evan Brown at center. Not a knock on Evan, just think Howerton is going to be that good. And Livingston should be a significant upgrade over anyone who played RT this year. I think there will be some reshuffling to get the right height at tackle, which will move Smith in side. 6-7 players at guard isn't generally the ideal in a passing offense, so they push outside.

LT - Livingston/Huhn
LG - Natour/Smith
C - Howerton/Webb
RG - Peveto/Lynch/Dennis
RT - Pursley/Ali/Wilds

There is a ton of talent there. And good size.

I would look out for Peavey making a serious push in the new offense. The offense will stretch things vertically a bit more, and that 15 yard out that Ben struggles so much with is a pretty important piece of the offense. You have to be able to throw accurately to the outside, not just down the seam. Peavey might be able to do that a bit better.

Finally, with all the talent we still have a WR and RB, I think Thomas, Honey, Benson, Shelmire will thrive in Dykes' offense. Remember McNeal in his year with June? Imagine West/Jones/Medlock in that space. And KeMon is big enough to fill the Zach Line/Ryan Moats power back role.

I think the offense will still be in a great spot next year if we can fix the defense.

It could. It could just as easily be not good or fun. Fingers crossed but losing Courtland and Quinn is a lot to have to replace.

Maybe I missed something, but who's Peveto? Caleb graduated a while back...

For the first time since the dying days of the June Empire, we should have real talent 2-3 deep on the OL.
Examples:
- Wilds, who has a ton of starts, might be 3rd string (I think he will end up 2nd string at guard).
- Natour might not start.

BTW - For people who haven't seen him, Lynch is a physical beast. His freshman year, I saw him easily push around Saena in a drill. It will be interesting to see if he can develop the technique to succeed on the OL.

To me, a lot of these were the best, most lauded recruits of the CM era. So this is where we will really see how successful his recruiting efforts were. Same thing on the DL.

Wilds I think might be too tall for a pass-first offense guard? Especially considering the size of our QBs.

Because of more of a deep passing game, mobility is going to be just as important as strength with the OL. That might hurt Lynch's position, but we will see.

Webb is a tackle, isn't he?

LT: Pursley / Ali
LG: Natour / Lynch
C: Howerton / Barton
RG: Todora / Dennis
RT: Levingston / Huhn / Wilds

I’m going to go ahead and come out with it. Call me a crazy homer if you want. 8-9 wins next year. With a win over one of TCU or Michigan.

Who would have thought Chad leaving was such a blessing? I know when I heard the news I thought the sky was falling and we might as well shut it down. Now I have confidence Sonny will get us to the first ten win season in my lifetime in the next few years.

Any particular reasons why, or are you just being a crazy homer?

Offense, defense, and special teams will all be improved. Better coaches, and older players (plus some JUCOs). My guess is they get some immediate DL help before fall practice too.

Think Lane Kiffin in year one at FAU.

Lane Kiffin didn't beat anyone like Michigan or TCU in year one at FAU. In fact he was 1-3 OOC play.
