Meet the Mustangs: DEs coach Randall Joyner

Postby PonyPride » Mon Feb 19, 2018 10:46 pm

New SMU defensive ends coach Randall Joyner visited with PonyFans.com to discuss his transition from playing to coaching, what he learned during coaching stints as a volunteer at Hawaii and then as a graduate assistant at Hawaii and at Ohio State, and what it means to him to land his first full-time coaching job ... at his alma mater.

I've always thought someone who actually played here at SMU might be a more passionate and effective recruiter for our program. Will be interesting to see how Randall does here

He always played with a ton of passion, and he obviously is a really intelligent guy. I bet he'll be a great recruiter once he gets comfortable with it.

Glad to see Rambo back at SMU. I like that he got to spend a year learning with a very successful staff at OSU. I am sure he will be a great recruiter and coach for us.

I saw him talking to a player on campus on a weekday afternoon like it was halftime at the superbowl. A+

This is exactly the kind of coach that SMU needs. His commitment, his passion, his personality,
his intelligence, his love of life, and his desire to help his players and have a teaching
relationship to impact their lives. He was a great player to watch at SMU and I wish him the
best. I like the way the new staff is shaping up and Randall Joyner is a big part of that.

If you have the chance to visit practice, watch Coach Joyner (I'm still getting used to that) during practice. He coaches with the same intensity he had when he played. There were a couple of times today when it looked like he had to resist the urge to charge into the pile and strip the ball from the ball carrier.

Watch him in practice and it's not hard to understand why defensive coordinator Kevin Kane said he loves Joyner's passion and intensity.
