Iconic College Stadiums

Postby Maryland78 » Mon Mar 05, 2018 9:30 pm

I'm planning on going to the Michigan game next Fall, and as I was driving through Ann Arbor today, I was thinking about what are the top 10 iconic college stadiums

I've been to Ohio State (Horseshoe) and Notre Dame and I would put them on the list...along with the Rose Bowl and probably University of Tennessee. What are other folks thoughts?

I've also been to:

University of Texas
Texas A&M
Florida State
Virginia Tech
Cotton Bowl
Astro Dome (Back in the day)
...many others

I have not been to nearly so many places as you but can agree with the choices of Ohio State, Rose Bowl, Tennessee, and would include the Cotton Bowl because of the history. Georgia Tech's stadium, Grant Field, rates at least an honorable mention for the same reason. And UGA's Sanford Stadium where the field is "between the hedges" definitely should be on the list.

The Coliseum and the Rose Bowl might rate a mention. I don't think of Kyle Field as "iconic" - has zero personality - kinda like an aggie.

West Virginia - very impressive when the whole stadium sings “Take me Home Country Roads”.

"Old" Doak Campbell stadium, with the lighted spear indicating the volume of the crowd...Florida Field as well.

Rice Stadium is cool. I just cannot imagine it full for a Rice home game. Just a different era when the Rice Athletic Dept/Administration realized the need for a 72,000 seat stadium on the campus. Even if they decide to tear off the upper decks, it'll still be pretty neat (and functional).

I went to a Rice game in 1997 against Texas featuring Ricky Williams and it was fairly well attended (53,811). Great atmosphere! I really wish they would commit to athletics as I enjoy playing them.

I played in Rice Stadium as a freshman. Only fans in the stands were parents. We could hear them chatting during the game.
