2019 Depth Chart - Outlook

Postby Digetydog » Sun Nov 25, 2018 9:01 pm

Preliminary Conclusions:
1) The defense is going to be deep, experienced and better. Finding good CB's will be critical.
2) For the first time in god knows how long, we are going to line up 300lb+ guys 2 deep on the OL.
3) We need a big back to improve the running game and a transfer QB to compete with Hicks.

Offense
Position 1 2 3 4 Notes and Assumptions

RB Freeman Jones Williams
TE Thedford Becker Redding Rau
WR1 Proche Page Miles

WR3 Sanders Bell
LT Morris Transfer Wilds, Webb and Smith Leave the program
LG Ali Todora I expect 1-2 GT or JUCO OL to be brought in
C Howerton Barton
RG J. Thomas Dennis
RT Livingston Gipson

Defense
Position 1 2 3 4

DE D. Scott Neals Choate
DT D. Gary Loveless

Note - I didn't include any 2019 recruits on the Depth Chart b/c they remain unsigned. For the most part, I used the depth chart issued by SMU for the Tulsa game as a foundation.

I'm pretty similar - only major thing is that I would start listing Nelson as a LB in the depth chart. And I bet with all of the injury concerns we actually see a JUCO or GT at RB unless we sign a frosh who can play immediately. Finally, I think Newman and Wiley both start on the DL after a year in the weight program.

QB: Hicks/JUCO/Brown/Upshaw
RB: JUCO or GT/Jones/Freeman/Williams
TE: Becker/Redding/Thedford
WR Group 1: Proche/Roberson/GT
WR Group 2: Bell/Sanders/Page
WR Group 3: Frosh and RS Frosh
LT: Morris/JUCO or GT
LG: Ali/Todora/Smith
C: Howerton/Barton
RG: JUCO or GT/Dennis/Webb
RT: Livingston/J Thomas/Wilds

Defense

DE: D. Scott/Neals/Choate
DT: D. Gary/Loveless/Biggurs
NT: Newman/Davis/McLaurin
DE Wiley/Nduike/Coxe
LB Robinson/Hailey
LB R. Moore/Williams
LB Nelson/Denbow
CB JUCO or GT/KJ/Davis
CB Hayes/Sutton/RS Frosh
S Onu/McQueen/Rock
S Clemons/JUCO or GT/RS Frosh

I don't see anyone playing at kicker or punter, just like this year.

9 out of Top 11 Tacklers on Defense were Morris recruits and of those 9--8 still have eligibility next year. It was not only coaching-it was maturing experience among a very young defensive roster which was always a year behind the offense

Denbow and Nelson were in the Top 10.

The biggest change imho was the fact that we didn’t have traffic cones playing at LB this year. Moore, Mitchell and the “other” LBs probably had 3X the TFL and sacks than last year’s crew had.

I think Richard Moore over Anthony Rhone probably accounted for a majority of the improvement. Nelson was definitely solid-not surprising because he was solid multi-year starter in the Big 10 too. Great example of how P5 transfers especially experienced, proven P5 transfers can make a huge difference. Both will probably have a good shot at All-AAC next year-Moore should be in consideration this year

Sacks allowed rose from 23 (13 games) in 2017 to 31 (12 games) in 2018. That was a nut bet Jason--because Morris generally kept a TE or blocking back in to protect the QB more often

lol. This is some serious selection bias.

Sonny's inheriting a roster that is 80% Morris players in 2018.

BTW, we are losing the last of the June recruits in Pursely, Wyatt, and Mitchell. Wyatt and Mitchell being two of our best players the last few years. Morris' defensive recruiting along with Malone's complete ineptitude was borderline malpractice.
Back off Warchild seriously.

I noticed that zero Bennett recruits recorded a tackle.

Gotta give the guy an 'A' for effort for still trying to push the 'Morris was a great recruiter' myth.

Stallion is right. Morris was still relegated to recruiting scraps pending progress with the program.
